The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of our National Regulation and Monitoring Team. Role overview: You will work with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes. You will coordinate and oversee all aspects of investigations, from identifying lines of enquiry and reviewing intelligence to coordinating evidence gathering, interviews, casefile preparation and, ultimately, prosecution. Investigations may involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.

Location and working pattern: This is a hybrid role involving work from home and your nearest Environment Agency Office with frequent travel for meetings and operational duties. You will respond to incidents as required and may receive additional payment and training for this role.

Team and scope: You will be part of the National Investigations Team, a nationally dispersed group of Investigators focused on bringing serious environmental offenders to justice. You will help lead, coordinate and develop the team and our investigations. For further details, please refer to the Additional Information Pack.

Responsibilities and activities:

  • Lead on complex or protracted criminal investigations, coordinating and delivering successful outcomes.
  • Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, and coordinate evidence gathering and interviews.
  • Prepare casefiles and support prosecution efforts for environmental crime cases.
  • Collaborate with Partnership Organisations and develop investigative teams and complex investigations.

Experience and qualifications required:

  • Strong investigative background with high attention to detail; self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation (PACE and CPIA); good verbal and written communication; basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime and experience leading serious criminal investigations; familiarity with Major Incident Rooms is desirable.
  • Demonstrated initiative in solving problems and developing investigation teams; driving and development experience is beneficial.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting within a 6-month probationary period.
  • Full driving licence is required.
