About our Machine Learning Team
At Monzo, Machine Learning Scientists have ownership across the entire ML lifecycle, from formulating ML problems to deploying models and monitoring their impact on key product and business metrics. Our ML Scientists collaborate in cross-functional squads across Data, Engineering, Product, and Risk, tackling issues including fraud detection and prevention, transaction monitoring for suspicious activities, customer risk assessment, and operational tooling.
About our Machine Learning Team for Personalisation
Personalisation is central to Monzo’s mission—to make money work for everyone. By delivering tailored recommendations, proactive insights, and intuitive experiences, we help customers make better financial decisions while strengthening their connection with the bank. Every model we build directly enhances the banking experience, making it more seamless, engaging, and rewarding.
Our Personalisation Data team brings together Analytics Engineers, Data Analysts, Machine Learning Scientists, and Data Scientists. As a Lead Machine Learning Scientist, you’ll develop models that make every customer interaction more relevant and timely, ensuring they receive products and services tailored to their needs.
From intelligent recommendations and predictive insights to seamless discovery and real-time personalisation, our ML Scientists tackle challenges that directly improve customer outcomes. Whether it’s surfacing the right savings product at the perfect moment, helping customers manage their spending, or simplifying financial planning, our work makes banking smarter, more intuitive, and truly customer-first.
Your day-to-day
As our most senior technical IC, you’ll provide key technical leadership and ship highly impactful ML-based solutions. You’ll work across the collective to identify the most impactful areas and lead solution development. You’ll work with mission-oriented cross-functional product squads, collaborating with product managers, data scientists, backend engineers and designers in an agile environment. You’ll advise senior business stakeholders and help set and advance our strategic direction across multiple squads. You’ll also be a technical leader within the ML discipline, helping to steer technical work and raise standards.
This will involve:
- Working with stakeholders across the organisation to identify and scope the most impactful opportunities to tackle product challenges with Machine Learning.
- Bringing learnings from previous successes in designing and building advanced ML systems to lead advancements in product development, e.g., deep learning, graph-based, and sequence-based architectures.
- Providing technical leadership to raise levels of technical expertise and best practice across the ML discipline, mentoring others.
- Working closely with our MLOps team to steer the ongoing development of tools to enable rapid iteration of models and optimization of the full ML lifecycle.

- You have a multi-year track record of excellence leading the technical work of a team in the development and deployment of advanced ML models tackling real business problems, preferably in a fast-moving tech company
- You're impact-driven and excited to own the end-to-end journey from a business problem to a measurable production impact
- You have experience mentoring other ML practitioners and raising the technical bar across the team
- You are a self-starter who proactively identifies impactful issues and opportunities
- Using advanced machine learning techniques to minimise financial crime and protect customers from fraud excites you
- You have extensive experience writing production Python code and strong SQL; comfortable using them daily and keen to learn Go lang used in backend microservices
- You’re comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity and help your team and stakeholders resolve it
- You want to build a product you and people you know use every day
- You have a product mindset and care about customer outcomes with data-informed decisions
- You’re excited about fast-moving ML developments and can communicate ideas to colleagues outside the domain
- You’re adaptable, curious and enjoy learning new technologies
