Overview

Venn Group is delighted to be partnered with a national health and wellbeing charity to recruit a Senior Payroll & People Officer on a part-time basis. This pivotal role will lead payroll and pension administration, ensure accurate and timely staff payments, and provide key support across people processes. Acting as the escalation point for payroll queries, the postholder will also contribute to HR administration, reporting, and organisational projects within a values-driven charity.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the organisational expert on end-to-end pay processes and lead liaison with the outsourced payroll provider
  • Lead on payroll and pension administration, including compliance with HMRC, Real Living Wage, cost-of-living increases, and statutory requirements
  • Act as the primary point of escalation for the Payroll Officer and chair the organisational Pay Panel, ensuring actions are delivered
  • Oversee all payroll-related processes for statutory and unpaid leave (SSP, SMP, SPP, etc.)
  • Manage people-related changes, producing accurate contracts and letters, and ensure efficient leaver administration
  • Act as first point of contact for the People Inbox/Helpdesk, triaging and responding to payroll and people queries
  • Administer and oversee staff loans/advances, acting as escalation point where needed
  • Provide accurate people data for reporting, support audits, and ensure records are compliant and up to date
  • Support People-related projects, including organisational change, restructures, and reward and recognition initiatives
  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, pension schemes, and payroll systems (e.g. Sage, People First)
  • Experience leading payroll processes and supporting People/HR administration
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines under pressure
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative team approach
  • Confident using Microsoft Office and HR/payroll systems
  • Commitment to working in a values-driven organisation supporting vulnerable groups

Qualifications and experience
