Job Description
The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it for the benefit of our staff, communities, and environment. Everyone starting in a new role will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support needed. As part of your comprehensive induction, you will be provided with the necessary equipment for your role.
We are looking for a dedicated individual to work in our Installations Team in the Yorkshire Area, focusing on hazardous waste and waste classification. Our EPR Installations handle large volumes of hazardous waste, which must be correctly classified and described. Misdescription can lead to environmental impacts, lost income for the EA, and unfair industry competition.
You will be the Installations Hazardous Waste Technical Lead, overseeing hazardous waste regulatory delivery, contributing to the hazardous waste regime delivery plan, and reporting on performance. Your focus will be on hazardous waste and waste classification compliance activities related to EPR Installations, reviewing waste classification assessments in line with Technical Guidance WM3.
Responding to incidents is a core part of our work. All team members will undergo training and participate in incident response activities, which may include additional payments. Full training will be provided. Please see the candidate pack for more details.
The Team
The post is based in the Yorkshire Installations Team, with potential locations in Leeds, Rotherham, York, or Beverley. The team works flexibly across the area, regulating sites in sectors such as chemicals manufacturing, landfill, incineration, food and drink, and paper and textiles.
Experience and Skills Required
- Strong operational/technical knowledge of the Hazardous Waste regime.
- Good understanding of hazardous waste compliance, Technical Guidance WM3, and the Hazardous Waste Regulations.
- Ability to handle complex situations pragmatically for the best environmental outcomes.
- Effective workload management, independence, self-motivation, and ability to meet reporting deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide technical leadership.
- Team-oriented with collaborative skills.
- Preferably a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental, or engineering discipline, and membership of a relevant professional organization.
Additional Information
Benefits include generous annual leave, a pension, flexible working, and career development opportunities. The role requires frequent travel across Yorkshire and a full driving license. Office locations include Leeds, Beverley, York, or Rotherham.
