The core work
- Automated settlement engine — revenue splits between several parties.
- FX layer — licensed cross-border currency conversion and payouts (USD/EUR/JPY/CHF, etc.).
- Payout rails — daily/weekly clearing
- Data layer — unified reconciliation, reporting, and analytics.
- API-first architecture for partners integration
- High-throughput transaction engine (global scale, low-latency)
- Data visibility: reconciliation and auditability
- Reliability & scalability (daily global transactions, 24/7 uptime)
PURPOSE: Why does this job exist?
This role exists to create top to bottom, and implement the technology solution to support the business objective of becoming the financial backbone of the global EV charging ecosystem.
ACCOUNTABILITIES: What are the key deliverables?
The CTO is expected to directly support our goals through deliverables such as:
- Review and further develop the outline application architecture
- Develop the tech stack and supporting infrastructure to support the application
- Design and build the application
ACTIVITIES: What does the jobholder have to do?
As CTO, you will take a hands-on role in building the core technology that powers our platform.
You will:
- Review, refine, and own the application architecture.
- Actively contribute to backend and API development, particularly in the early stages, while shaping the future tech stack and infrastructure.
- Design and build the real-time clearing, settlement, and payments platform, ensuring scalability, security, and compliance.
- Integrate with EV charging protocols (e.g. OCPP, OCPI), payment gateways, FX engines, and compliance systems.
- Establish monitoring and uptime practices to support mission-critical flows.
- Collaborate closely with the CEO, leadership team, operations, and commercial functions to align technology with business priorities.
- Build and mentor a small technical team as the platform grows.
- Work with external technology to deliver seamless integrations.
RELATIONSHIPS: Who does the jobholder have to work with?
The CTO will operate at the centre of the business, working closely with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure that technology underpins our growth and strategic objectives.
- CEOs, Investors and Leadership Team – partner on strategy, vision, and execution; provide clear technology roadmap and reporting.
- Sales Team – support customer acquisition and retention by ensuring the product meets commercial and market needs.
- External Partners – collaborate on APIs, platforms, and joint innovations to strengthen our ecosystem, and interoperability through secure, scalable integrations.
- Customers – work directly with partners to deliver seamless technical solutions that integrate with their platforms.
- Suppliers – manage relationships with technology and infrastructure providers to ensure quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Governmental Partners – engage on regulatory compliance, workforce initiatives, and grant opportunities to support expansion.

This is a new role in an exciting start-up business that is fully funded and with the founding management team in place. The role holder will be a key member of the management team and an equity holder. The business is ready for full solution development.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
We are looking for a hands-on senior engineer with the capability and ambition to step into the CTO role. The ideal candidate will bring:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; postgraduate or MBA beneficial.
- 7–10 years’ experience in backend/API engineering, ideally with a focus on digital payments, mobility, or EV infrastructure.
- Strong expertise in designing and coding backend systems (Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, or similar).
- Proven ability to build cloud-native, API-driven systems
- Knowledge of digital payments and financial flows, including FX, clearing, and settlement is desirable
- Familiarity with EV charging standards and roaming protocols (OCPP, OCPI) is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity, data protection, and regulatory compliance (AML/KYC, PCI DSS).
- Experience working in high-growth or start-up environments where speed and ownership matter.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote/distributed setup while collaborating across commercial and operational teams.
