Discover a career at HMRC. As a Solutions Architect you will help define HMRC’s technology direction and create impactful national‑scale IT solution designs across all UK tax and benefits, including Self‑Assessment, VAT, Corporation Tax, Counter‑Fraud, and international trade.

Responsibilities

  • Leading a team of solution architects within one or more strands of IT Change Programmes, setting direction for the team and delivering results.
  • Accountability for producing technical IT Solution Designs on projects that align to the HMRC IT Strategy and deliver business outcomes.
  • Responsibility for authoring costed design documentation, working closely with business stakeholders and technical architects to create cohesive solutions that meet the business and user needs.
  • Working with Delivery Teams and partners to ensure the Solution Design is delivered and implemented.
  • Building strong relationships with key business and CDIO partners.
  • This role may require travel and overnight stays.

Qualifications

  • Experience in developing solutions at pace through Architectural Governance and managing architecture risks.
  • Experience working on multiple significant large‑scale complex IT change / transformation programme designs.
  • Ability to pick up new technologies and architecture concepts quickly, understand their strengths and weaknesses and apply that learning.
  • Collaborative problem solver, working with colleagues to identify root causes allowing you to create and deliver pragmatic IT solutions.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with stakeholders with a broad spectrum of viewpoints and document and present their views from an architecture perspective.

Technical skills

  • Experience of how AI, robotics, machine learning, and decision engines can be utilised to accurately reconcile payments against accounts.
  • Experience architecting payment solutions at scale.
  • Architecting IT applications, including making use of Cloud, IaaS, SaaS and PaaS.
  • Experienced in delivering Microsoft Azure and Power Platform integrated solutions.
  • Knowledge of MS Dynamics and extending its core capabilities.
  • Experienced in integrating a range of technologies using APIs.
  • Knowledge of a range of technology stacks and the ability to take a balanced approach to technology selection.
  • Good understanding of security and practical experience in ensuring that it is central to all solution designs.
  • Managing application through the full application lifecycle from Idea to Decommission.
  • Application integration and awareness of programming techniques and languages.
  • Awareness of cost modelling / estimating particularly of cost drivers to support commercial challenge activity.
  • Approaches to managing technical debt while delivering required functionality.
  • Possess TOGAF or BCS qualification or be prepared to work towards achieving.
  • Knowledge of ITILv4.
