Senior Technical Artist (Open World / UE5 PCG)

6 days ago Be among the first 25 applicants

Location: Guildford or London, UK (Hybrid / On-site)

Experience: 5+ years in technical art, world building, or procedural workflows

Projects: At least 1 shipped AAA or large-scale open-world title

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Artist with deep Unreal Engine 5 experience and a passion for building beautiful, performant, and scalable open worlds through procedural generation and technical artistry.

You’ll sit at the intersection of art, tools, and engineering, designing data‑driven tools & pipelines and procedural workflows that empower our environment team to build at massive scale without sacrificing fidelity or artistic intent.

Working closely with rendering engineers, world builders, and technical designers, you’ll help define how our next‑generation open‑world multiplayer game is created, optimised, and brought to life.

This is a rare opportunity to help invent the future of large‑scale procedural world creation inside Unreal Engine 5.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement procedural content generation (PCG) workflows within Unreal Engine 5.
  • Develop tools, blueprints, and editor extensions that enable environment and world teams to efficiently create large‑scale content.
  • Collaborate with rendering engineers to ensure PCG systems are rendering, workflow and performance friendly.
  • Build and maintain a modular system for terrain, foliage, and world composition using World Partition, PCG Graphs, and data layers.
  • Where necessary, integrate and extend external tools (e.g. Houdini, Gaia, World Machine, or other procedural tools of choice), to enhance in‑engine world generation.
  • Establish best practices for procedural materials, instancing, and HLOD workflows.
  • Prototype and validate data‑driven systems for biome generation, asset scattering, and environmental variation.
  • Optimize asset pipelines and world‑building processes for runtime performance and memory efficiency.
  • Partner with the art and lighting teams to preserve artistic vision while automating world generation and placement.
  • Support content streaming, LOD, and material workflows for large open environments.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years experience as a Technical Artist, Tools Developer, or World Building TA in game development.
  • 1+ shipped title in an open‑world, large‑scale, or high‑fidelity environment project.
  • Deep understanding of Unreal Engine 5 tools and workflows — including PCG Graphs, World Partition, Data Layers, and Blueprint scripting.
  • Strong grasp of procedural generation principles — either in Unreal PCG or through Houdini, World Machine, Gaea, or in‑house systems.
  • Experience creating or extending editor tools, utilities, and procedural placement systems in C++ or Python.
  • Solid understanding of materials, shaders, and instancing for scalable rendering.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance visual fidelity and performance in open‑world environments.
  • Excellent collaboration skills — able to partner with engineers, environment artists, and designers to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Experience with runtime procedural generation and streaming systems.
  • Familiarity with Houdini Digital Assets (HDAs) and PDG pipelines.
  • Understanding of rendering pipelines (Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Texturing) and how they relate to procedural workflows.
  • Background in terrain authoring, biome design, or environment art.
  • Experience with UCG platforms (Roblox, UEFN)
  • Interest in automation, optimisation, and tool scalability for large environments.
  • Scripting experience with Python, C#, or C++ for Unreal tool development.
  • Based in or able to relocate to Guildford or London, UK (hybrid or on‑site preferred).
