Backend Engineering Lead | London (Hybrid – 3 days in office) | Up to £100,000 per annum + Annual Bonus | Permanent
Peaple Talent have partnered with a brilliant client in London looking to recruit a Backend Engineering Lead on a full time permanent basis.
The engineering team plays a key role in enabling our client’s operations by designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise software that serves internal business needs. This includes creating integrations and middleware solutions, as well as building bespoke applications tailored to specific requirements.
The Engineering Lead will oversee the backend engineering function. In this capacity, the Lead will partner with IT leadership and business stakeholders to shape and deliver the team’s roadmap, ensure accountability for outcomes, and foster professional growth through coaching and support. The role also involves upholding high standards of technical execution and operational reliability. The team primarily develop software in Python, with deployments and operations managed on Microsoft Azure.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership to the backend engineering group, ensuring strong technical direction alongside effective team management.
- Drive recruitment, onboarding, and continuous development of engineering talent to strengthen team capability.
- Take ownership of the team’s delivery commitments and guide decisions on system architecture and design.
- Promote automation and efficiency, helping non-technical partners recognize the strategic value of engineering-led improvements.
- Partner with engineers and business stakeholders to shape clear technical requirements for projects and products.
- Work closely with colleagues across functions to design, validate, and roll out technology solutions.
- Ensure solutions are designed and delivered to align with business objectives and measurable success outcomes.
- Act as the voice of engineering in cross-departmental initiatives and planning sessions.
- Define goals and performance expectations at both team and individual levels, and track progress against them.
Key Experience Required
- Proven background in designing and delivering enterprise-grade software solutions.
- Beneficial experience includes T-SQL, X++, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, and familiarity with supply chain, retail, or eCommerce domains.
- Track record of leading and developing engineering teams, with both technical and people management responsibilities.
- Excellent communication abilities, with strength in stakeholder engagement and problem-solving.
- Strong awareness of business priorities and the ability to balance technical decisions with technical outcomes.
- Skilled in performance optimization, troubleshooting, complex issues, and applying secure coding standards.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Python.
- Deep knowledge of system architecture, continuous integration/continuous delivery, and modern engineering practices.
- Solid expertise with cloud technologies, with a focus on Microsoft Azure.
