Overview
Are you ready to join a team of experts transforming healthcare technology across England? We’re looking for Solution Architects with experience in cloud-based systems, big data and analytics, next-generation networks, APIs, platforms, cyber security, and digital strategy development. Our work directly benefits patients & NHS staff at a national scale.
About NHS England and Opportunity
This is an exciting time to join NHS England as a Solution Architect. With the publication of the NHS 10-Year Plan, digital transformation is at the heart of reshaping services. The Solution Architecture function delivers architecture design, technical consultancy & ownership of large-scale NHS programmes. You’ll typically support a Senior Architect on national systems or domains such as the NHS App.
What’s in it for you
- Be part of a dynamic team using data & digital technology to transform health and care.
- Build experience in a role where your work has a direct and positive impact.
- Access a wide range of learning & development opportunities to support your personal & professional growth.
Opportunities across key areas
- Applications – Work on the next generation of NHS England applications, including the NHS App, NHS.uk, Urgent & Emergency Care, and General Practice. Help deliver solutions that benefit both end users and the public.
- Security – Influence stakeholders on the value of Security Architecture in a complex, regulated environment. Ensure data is handled securely and digital services operate with integrity and efficiency.
- Infrastructure – Contribute to our sustainable hybrid cloud strategy, support next-gen network innovations, and help drive digital collaboration through the Microsoft arrangement.
- Platforms – Develop the next generation of NHS England’s application services, APIs, event-driven systems, and registries. These national platforms share data, improve healthcare, and save lives.
Responsibilities
- Taking ownership of specific architecture components, ensuring alignment with standards and enterprise frameworks.
- Collaborating within agile teams alongside service designers, user researchers, engineers, and clinicians.
- Acting as a technical contact point for stakeholders and suppliers.
Organisation purpose alignment
The NHS England board has set out the top-level purpose for the organisation to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all, informing the detailed design work. We will achieve this by:
- Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities.
- Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential.
- Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care.
- Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation.
- Delivering value for money.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
If you are successful at interview, we will run an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) in the Electronic Staff Record system (ESR). This transfer collects information from a previous or current NHS employer to support onboarding, including statutory and mandatory competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You will have the opportunity to inform us if you do not consent during the process.
The post of Solution Architect has been awarded a Recruitment and Retention Premia (RRP) to recognise current labour market conditions. The role attracts an additional monthly RRP payment equal to 15% per annum. RRP is non-contractual and subject to review.
Please note that the reason for the fixed term of this contract is - Short-term vacancy.
Earlier this year the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions to create a smaller, more strategic centre.
You can find further details about the role, including key responsibilities and accountabilities, alongside the organisational structure and person specification in the attached Job Description and other supporting documents.
Secondments: Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only; agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.
