Stevenage with Hybrid Working

At the IET, making our world a better place starts by creating a better place for our people. At the IET you’ll have more than just a job. Our work is exciting and challenging, connecting the people who solve the problems that matter. It means working with us has real meaning and impact, and you’ll grow – professionally and personally – in ways you never thought possible. We’re also making significant investments in our people, including providing a modern, vibrant workplace and embracing hybrid working.

What you’ll be doing

As a Solutions Architect, you’ll be at the heart of designing technology solutions that address the IET’s business needs while aligning with our enterprise architecture standards and long-term strategy. Working closely with the Enterprise Architect, business stakeholders, and delivery teams, you’ll ensure that every design is practical, feasible, and built for long-term value.

You’ll lead solution design from initial concept through to implementation, producing high-quality designs, exploring options through prototypes and proofs of concept, and guiding delivery teams to bring those solutions to life. You’ll also play a key role in optimising how we use existing technology capabilities, avoiding unnecessary complexity, and ensuring solutions are sustainable and cost-effective.

This is a collaborative role where you’ll bridge the gap between business and technology, translating complex technical concepts into clear, compelling ideas for a variety of audiences. You’ll also help to evolve our architecture patterns and processes, contributing to a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement.

What we hope you can bring to the role

We’re looking for a strategic problem-solver who’s as comfortable thinking big-picture as they are working through technical detail. You’ll have a strong track record in designing and delivering solutions across the full technology stack, from user experience to infrastructure, and will understand how to balance technical ambition with practical delivery.

You’ll bring expertise in architectural principles, cloud technologies, and DevOps, coupled with the communication skills to engage stakeholders at all levels. Above all, you’ll be driven to design solutions that are not only technically sound but truly meet business needs.

We’d love to get to know you

Is Imposter syndrome creeping in? Don’t worry – we’d rather hear from you this time than not hear from you at all! Read on for a little more information about the role; but also, keep in mind that we’re open to discussing flexible ways of working, including reduced hours and working in an agile way, supported by a hybrid working framework that allows you to find the best place to do your best work.

A little more about the role

  • Design technical solutions that address prioritised business needs, aligning with IET enterprise architecture standards and strategic objectives.
  • Produce high-quality solution designs that are robust, feasible, and deliver long-term value.
  • Work with stakeholders to frame business problems and opportunities, exploring options through proofs of concept, prototypes, and visual presentations.
  • Evaluate solution options to balance cost, complexity, delivery time, and alignment with existing capabilities.
  • Collaborate with the Enterprise Architect to enhance architecture patterns, processes, and capabilities.
  • Define and document product scope, requirements, and impact assessments, ensuring clarity for delivery teams.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of IET systems and capabilities to inform solution choices.
  • Support delivery teams during implementation to ensure designs are realised effectively.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, adapting your style as needed.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, contributing ideas to improve our technical landscape.

A little more about what we’re looking for

  • Proven experience designing and delivering solutions across the full technology stack.
  • Strong knowledge of architectural principles, cloud technologies, and DevOps practices.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to develop practical, value-focused solutions.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working in Agile environments and guiding teams through iterative delivery.
  • Confidence in evaluating trade-offs and making well-reasoned design decisions.
  • Proactive, collaborative approach with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and best practice in solution design.
