Overview
An exciting role has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join Sussex Community's nationally-recognised sustainability team, supporting the Care Without Carbon (CWC) programme within the Trust and the wider region. This role is for 3 days per week but we could also consider a 2 day per week role, spread over 4 half days.
The post-holder will play a key role supporting Care Without Carbon's sustainability engagement programmes and associated wellbeing/sustainable behaviour change offering both internally and for other trusts. Please note this is not a sustainability officer role, the focus of the work is on staff engagement in support of sustainable healthcare.

Responsibilities
- Day-to-day management of multifaceted sustainability engagement campaigns and programmes at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust and other partner NHS organisations.
- Day-to-day planning and support of engagement programme in line with comms strategy and editorial planner.
- Supporting delivery against the "Culture" workstream of the Care Without Carbon programme at SCFT and partner trusts.
- Reporting on the impact of engagement work, including supporting the development and delivery of metrics to report on complex sustainability benefits and producing associated visuals.
- Supporting the rollout of Care Challenge Share, our staff engagement programme to engage staff and our community with Care Without Carbon.
- Attending events at SCFT sites and our partner Trusts and acting as an ambassador for Care Without Carbon, SCFT and partner organisations.
- Support delivery of the CWC Envoy programme at SCFT and partner trusts.
- Promoting Care Without Carbon outside of the Trust and building links with other NHS organisations alongside external organisations.
- Support and maintain the wider engagement of stakeholders within SCFT including clinical staff, CWC Envoys and patients as well as those from partner NHS organisations and the wider community.
- Content creation for website news items, case studies and staff profiles for the CWC website.
- Maintain a social media presence for CWC, using existing channels and setting up new ones as appropriate.
Programme collateral
- Creating written or visual communications materials for SCFT and other trusts for internal or external use to support delivery of the engagement programme and related activities. This includes distilling complex information into accessible language for stakeholders, producing items such as internal trust communications, blog posts, case studies, posters, presentations, toolkits, newsletters, leaflets and social media content.
- Day-to-day management of online presence including content for the CWC website and trust intranet/internet sites; weekly creation of web content and promotion, plus monitoring and resolution of faults.
- Liaison with designers/suppliers on the development and delivery of communications materials, including briefs for quotes and managing delivery.
- Assisting with quarterly production of an e-based newsletter for several trusts in the programme.
- Development of webinar content, including researching suitable subject matter and potential guest speakers.
- Management of campaign elements such as prize draws, goodie bags and competitions, including sourcing items from local sustainability-focused businesses.
- Producing ad hoc materials and updating collateral using Adobe InDesign or Canva.
Events, workshops, stakeholder engagement and training
- Planning, managing and facilitating CWC events (online and face-to-face as appropriate), including NHS Sustainability Day events and events linked to national/international sustainability agendas.
- Attending internal and external events as an ambassador for the CWC programme, including staff induction and trust conferences.
- Engaging with staff at all levels, site visits, and managing relationships with facilities staff, CWC Envoys and frontline clinical staff; communicating complex information in accessible ways.
- Developing and delivering training through workshops and other mechanisms, primarily for CWC Envoys but also for other staff groups in line with the engagement programme.
- Providing guidance and supervision for tasks undertaken by the Estates Admin team in support of the engagement programme.
Measurement and reporting
- Monthly monitoring of engagement programme KPIs.
- Supporting periodic review of the engagement programme as part of continuous improvement and gathering feedback from stakeholders.
- Assisting the Communications Manager in planning and creating the Annual Sustainability Progress Report.
- Supporting development of key metrics to measure the sustainability impact of staff engagement programmes.
- Producing graphics and visuals to support reporting of the CWC programme, projects and initiatives and communicating complex information clearly; including use of graphic design software such as InDesign.
Finance
- Responsible for purchases of goods and services linked to the staff engagement programme, including CWC merchandise, printed collateral, banners, etc., and maintaining stock levels.
- Contributing to the development of departmental budgets for engagement work within SCFT and across partner trusts and the wider NHS system.
- Responsible for delivery against agreed consultancy budgets for external costs including printed materials and graphic design.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
- Undergraduate degree in a communications-related subject, or equivalent experience.
Experience
- Proven experience of working in the communications function of a complex organisation, with ability to communicate complex information to a range of stakeholders in writing (news items/blogs) and across platforms including social media.
Desirable
- Experience with a wide range of tools and approaches; ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines; experience engaging with professionals at different levels; experience delivering sustainability-related communications programmes; experience delivering multifaceted engagement projects.
Skills and knowledge
- Ability to create a range of communications materials from complex information; strong writing and document design; confident presenting to large audiences; strong teamwork and ability to work autonomously.
- Desirable: ability to work with graphic design tools (InDesign or Canva) and to take photographs for collateral.
