Overview
We’re seeking a skilled and motivated Crime Analyst to join the National Environmental Crime Unit – a dynamic and high-profile part of the Environment Agency.
Environmental crime is a growing threat, drawing attention from the public, media and international stakeholders. From illegal waste operators to organised crime groups, the risks are real – and so is our commitment to stopping them. As a Crime Analyst, you’ll be at the heart of our intelligence-led approach. You’ll develop and access intelligence from a wide range of sources, producing high-quality analytical products that directly inform investigations and enforcement action. Your analysis will help us target offenders causing the greatest threat, risk and harm and protect communities and the environment.
This is a unique opportunity to make a real impact in a fast-moving, nationally significant area of work. You’ll be part of a team that values professionalism, innovation and collaboration – and you’ll be supported with training and development to grow your expertise.
We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please clearly include any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to identify intelligence gaps, assess risk and help direct resources where needed most.
- Respond to incidents as required, with the potential for additional payment and full training; flexible working arrangements available to support the incident role.
Experience and skills
- Experience of working in an intelligence or regulatory environment is essential.
- Ability to handle sensitive information, use intelligence systems confidently, and produce high-quality products that inform decision-making.
- Strong communication, attention to detail and self-motivation.
- Ability to build strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Other requirements
- Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) will be required.
- Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to the Birmingham office will be required on occasions.
- Incident response is a key part of work; you’ll need to take on an incident role and be available to support incidents or business continuity. This may include extra pay and full training with flexible working.
