Technical Architect role at Gespreksleider Jacobs on behalf of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

Join a team at the heart of the global economy. The DBT is looking for experienced Technical Architects to shape the future of digital services that serve citizens, businesses and government. You will oversee services and their design from inception to completion at portfolio level, with a primary tech stack of Python/Django, Node.js/React and cloud platforms including AWS and Azure. Salary range £67,867 to £85,413 plus Civil Service benefits and 29% employer pension contribution. Flexible, hybrid working from London, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham or Salford.

Role Summary

You will join a growing, collaborative team helping to shape the technical direction of digital services from discovery through to live operations. You will lead the overall technical design, ensuring services are user-centred, secure, scalable and aligned with organisational goals. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, apply agile methods and contribute to portfolio-level strategy and governance. Technology stack includes Python/Django, Node.js/React within cloud services such as AWS and Azure.

Main Responsibilities

  • Define and champion the technical strategy for services, ensuring alignment with user needs and business goals
  • Lead technical specialists across multiple projects, solving architectural challenges
  • Design and assure open-source, user-centred systems in agile environments
  • Own the technical design and evolution of services, including integration and interoperability
  • Provide technical governance and present designs to boards such as the Technical Design Authority
  • Build cloud solution designs and ensure they meet quality, security, and performance standards
  • Collaborate with architects across DBT to ensure alignment and coherence
  • Horizon scan for emerging technologies and assess their relevance to DBT

Essential Skills

  • Track record designing and delivering secure cloud solutions using AWS and/or Azure with API-driven architecture
  • Skilled in producing high- and low-level designs, presenting to governance boards and ensuring alignment with standards
  • Experience developing web services using Python/Django and/or Node.js/React with knowledge of cloud technologies, open-source technologies and secure system design
  • Proven leadership in guiding technical teams, delivering user-focused services in agile environments and communicating complex concepts to varied stakeholders

Desirable Skills

  • Interest in shaping government best practices, standards and policies
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and select appropriate tools, viewing technology as an enabler
  • Background in software/web development progressing into Technical Architecture

Salary

Salary is dependent on location and technical skills as assessed at interview. London-based range: £71,590 to £85,413. National range: £67,867 to £81,793.

  • Hybrid working includes 40% in-office per month (typically 2 days/week). Office locations: London, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham or Salford.
