2026 Graduate Programme - Building Specialists - Fire, Energy Solutions & Facades

We are recruiting Graduates for our Building Specialists teams in Fire Engineering, Digital Services, Façade Engineering and Energy Solutions. You will be embedded in multidisciplinary teams, mentored by experienced professionals, and gain exposure to real-world challenges and innovative solutions while developing your skills in a collaborative environment.

What you will do

Working as a Graduate in one of our Building Specialists teams, you will contribute to exciting and innovative projects and help deliver best-in-class service in a complex design and compliance environment. You will join a supportive team culture with mentoring and guidance as you develop your skills.

Projects

Our teams work on prestigious assignments, including delivering projects such as:

  • Monklands Replacement Hospital, Scotland
  • Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle
  • New Riverside Stand, Fulham FC
  • Control Posts, Heathrow Airport
  • Mayfield Republic

Our Building Specialist Teams

Fire Engineering

Our Fire Engineering team develops the overall fire strategy for a building, including the design of fire protection systems, means of escape, building layout, smoke control, sprinkler systems, and fire performance of materials. Graduates help protect buildings and occupants from fire and smoke by ensuring compliance with Building Regulations (Part B) and producing fire strategy documents and technical reports or developing fire-engineered solutions where code guidance is not feasible.

Day-to-day Activities Could Include:

  • Producing fire strategy reports for proposed and existing buildings
  • Writing technical design notes
  • Marking up architectural drawings to produce fire strategy plans
  • Reviewing existing documentation related to the above
  • Design team meetings with internal/external disciplines and site visits
  • Responding to fire-related queries from other disciplines (IT & Security, facades, MEP, structures, architects, etc.)

Digital Services

Digital Services lead the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM), information management and visualization across Property and Buildings. You will be part of a forward-thinking Digital Services team delivering BIM and digital innovations to transform design, construction and maintenance of structures.

Day-to-day Activities Could Include:

  • Supporting project teams in delivering BIM Digital Advisory and innovative services
  • Developing and managing digital strategies across a project’s life cycle
  • Coordinating and reviewing BIM models for accuracy and consistency
  • Ensuring compliance with BIM standards (ISO19650)
  • Using common data environments (e.g., BIM360 Docs, ProjectWise)
  • Implementing workflows to support digital collaboration across disciplines
  • Contributing to bids and proposals with BIM and digital support

Façade Engineering

Façade Engineering covers the design of building envelopes, involving structural engineering, environmental design, sustainability, acoustics, fire engineering, materials technology, manufacturing processes, prototype testing and site installation. The façade package is a key element on projects, typically around 30% of build cost. Graduates work closely with signature architects, developers and contractors from concept through construction.

We promote development through experience and continued learning to build specialist knowledge and engineering skills in this highly technical field.

Day-to-day Activities Could Include:

  • Preparing engineering calculations including thermal modelling, Building physics and Glass design analysis
  • Preparing design details, drawings and deliverables
  • Attending sessions to understand façade materials and engineering aspects
  • Carrying out site inspections to assess façade installations
  • Raising awareness of weather performance, building physics, ventilation, solar gain, insulation and glare control
  • Interfacing with other design disciplines (Architectural, Structures, MEP, Fire, Acoustics)
  • Using software such as Autodesk Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, Flixo, Bisco, Builddesk, Strand, SJ Mepla

Energy Solutions

Energy Solutions is WSP’s heat networks business, focused on evaluation, engineering and construction supervision. Graduates join a team at the forefront of developing this technology, with opportunities to become chartered engineers and contribute to combating the climate emergency.

Day-to-day Activities Could Include:

  • Getting to know our clients and supporting project managers in progress meetings
  • Visiting construction sites to assess progress and quality
  • Learning to use new software and WSP tools
  • Joining design team meetings and interfacing with other disciplines
  • Creating presentations to communicate outcomes of reports
  • Assisting bid managers to learn how we win work
