Your role
Join us at Stockport Council as a Senior Practitioner in Stockport Family. We’re looking for driven, dedicated, and caring children’s social workers to help support some of our most important people, our children and their families. Our approach centres around relationships; social workers assess and deliver interventions from the point of a family needing support until that family no longer requires a statutory service from us, meaning for our families there are no transition points.
As a Senior Practitioner you will meet families, build relationships, and retain these relationships across all levels of intervention, to see the outcomes of the work you’ve done. You will be a key part of our management structure, providing support to Team Leaders, contributing to performance management, developing student and ASYE social workers, and holding a reduced but more complex caseload to support professional development.
In Stockport, career development is key. We support long-term career goals with mentoring, buddying, and yearly professional development reviews (PDRs).
You will be part of a friendly team where each team has two experienced senior practitioners and a skilled team leader.
Current social workers have shared positive experiences of support, collaboration, and purposeful direct work with children and families.
About You
In Stockport, we are driven by our values and seek social workers motivated by building relationships and empowering families. Ideally, Senior Practitioners will have experience across both duty and locality systems, with exposure to private and public court proceedings and experience of the pre-proceedings process. We look for hard-working, passionate individuals who want children to reach their full potential, who are team-players and willing to share knowledge and learn.
Learning and development is a key part of our culture. We will support you to flourish and develop in your career and offer tailored support as needed.
About Us
In Stockport, our vision is for all children to have the best start in life. We co-design an outcomes framework focused on safety, belonging, health and wellbeing, achievement, voice, and empowerment. We operate a restorative practice model where relationships are central to everything we do, with a strong emphasis on language and ambition for families.

Our commitment to our staff

- Protected time for CPD and yearly professional development reviews (PDR).
- Solid induction into social work with progressive increase in caseload and complexity.
- High-quality reflective supervision monthly from line managers; ASYE mentors provide additional space to think and learn.
- Access to expert advice and consultation from IROs, Aspire service, disability and short breaks teams, and other services.
- Full corporate induction with ongoing support from senior leadership for new starters.
