Morela is partnering with one of the UK's fastest-growing AI consultancies to hire an AI Assurance SME with deep expertise in mission systems, edge deployments, and operational AI environments. This is a unique opportunity to influence how AI is deployed safely and responsibly in high-stakes, mission-critical contexts.

Contract: Long-term (3+ years)

About the Role

You'll act as a trusted subject matter expert on the assurance of AI used in complex operational systems. From autonomous platforms to edge-deployed AI, you'll shape assurance criteria, manage risks, and ensure solutions are robust, ethical, and aligned with defence and government standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assurance across mission systems, edge AI deployments, and operational rollouts.
  • Translate operational needs into practical assurance criteria based on leading frameworks and regulations.
  • Support test, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEV&V) methods for edge-based AI.
  • Advise projects on safety, resilience, and human factors in AI adoption.
  • Guide assurance of autonomous/semi-autonomous platforms, aligned with MOD Ethical Principles for AI.
  • Define criteria for human-machine teaming, ensuring trust, transparency, and operator control.
  • Identify and mitigate risks and dependencies around AI adoption at the edge.

Essential Experience

  • Strong track record in mission-critical operational systems (defence, aerospace, transport, etc.).
  • Deep knowledge of AI assurance and risk frameworks (NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, EU AI Act).
  • Hands-on experience deploying AI/ML at the edge, including resource-constrained environments.
  • Experience with adversarial ML techniques (robustness testing, red-teaming) and cyber resilience.
  • Experience integrating or assuring autonomous/semi-autonomous systems (UAVs, UGVs, maritime, aerospace).
  • Applied expertise in human factors for autonomy (trust, usability, operator oversight).
  • Ability to engage confidently with technical, operational, and regulatory stakeholders.

Why Join?

  • Be part of a rapidly growing AI consultancy delivering high-impact national projects.
  • Influence critical programmes where AI safety, resilience, and ethics are paramount.
  • Long-term 3+ year engagement, offering stability on cutting-edge projects.
