Purpose of Job

The Associate will use a broad range of analytical and research skills to support professionals within the Corporate Banking team, assisting more senior colleagues in the execution and origination of transactions that support and widen both Financial Sponsor and Corporate Borrower relationships across Europe. The role involves building and maintaining close working relationships with colleagues across Investment Banking, Global Markets and Credit Risk Management.

Main Objectives & Requirements Of The Role

  • Review due diligence materials and legal documentation for new opportunities and transactions, preparing and coordinating questions/comments and interfacing with external advisers (e.g., technical, commercial, financial, insurance and legal).
  • Assist more senior colleagues in preparing detailed documents including business proposals, memoranda, credit and business approval requests, loan recommendations, and company information documents.
  • Assist in the preparation of pitchbooks for structuring coordinator roles.
  • Assist in the execution of structuring coordinator mandates including liaising with banks, external legal counsels, due diligence advisors, marketing materials, and ratings analysis.
  • Review and develop models for analysing lending/underwriting opportunities or structuring coordinator roles.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative client analysis and industry research.
  • Assist with preparation of presentations and coordinate pitch books with colleagues across the Bank to position CIBC for future roles.
  • Attend investor presentations and client meetings in support of more senior colleagues.
  • Assist in executing all facets of the group’s objectives, including portfolio management of the European Infrastructure book, amendment/waiver requests and annual reviews for existing borrowers.
  • Maintain group databases including electronic records and reports.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete daily and weekly work assignments.

Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, economics, science, engineering or related discipline, or demonstrated experience.
  • Strong financial modelling skills and the ability to run downside sensitivities as part of credit analysis.
  • Understanding of external rating methodologies (S&P, Moody’s, Fitch) for desktop ratings analysis.
  • Knowledge of business, accounting, economics and finance; prior credit analysis experience is preferred.
  • Strong technical and MS Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Service oriented approach with internal colleagues, product partners, clients and advisers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including explaining loan recommendations and analyses; ability to defend recommendations to internal committees as experience grows.
  • Ability to work in a demanding, dynamic, results-oriented, client-centric environment.
  • Good multi-tasking across different clients, sectors, and types of work; ability to assess unstructured problems; strong analytical and quantitative skills; professional ethics and reputation.
