About thisopportunity
We are seeking an Archivist (full time,permanent) to join our teams at Kendal and Barrow ArchiveCentres. The successful candidate will be expected to work inboth Centres, typically 2 days a week in Kendal and 3 days a weekin Barrow.
This is an exciting time to join CumbriaArchives where we are embarking on a major programme of renewalwith the introduction of Preservica digital preservation systemand Axiell Collections collection management system. As well asextensive projects of improvements to our archives centres inBarrow and Kendal.
Tasks will include cataloguing andappraisal of collections, answering enquiries, managing thesearchrooms, assisting with the preservation of collections, andcontributing to the management of digital archives. There is alsoan opportunity to support the delivery of a wide range ofoutreach activities, including talks, displays, working withschools, and promotion of the Archive Service to a wideraudience.
The successful candidate must have a postgraduate qualification in archive administration, recognised bythe Archives and Records Association. Experience of using archivecollection management systems is essential, and experience withdigital preservation software is highly desirable.
Our Archive Centres in Kendal and Barrowcare for the written heritage of Cumbria comprising the historiccounty of Westmorland and the Furness area of Lancashire. Theircollections from the 12th Century to the present day inWestmorland include the papers of leading families such as LadyAnne Clifford of Appleby and Skipton, Fleming of Rydal Hall andthe Dallam Tower estate. The close association of the LakeDistrict can be found in the papers of the Friends of the LakeDistrict, the Fell and Rock Club, and the papers of thefellwalker and author, Alfred Wainwright. In Furness theindustrial heritage of Barrow is reflected in the archives ofVickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited, the Barrow HematiteIron and Steel Company, and the Millom and Askam Hematite Ore andIron Company.
Cumbria Archives is a hosted serviceworking for Cumberland Council, maintaining the archvies of thetwo counties Cumberland, and Westmorland and Furness.
This is a permanent, full time, post andmay include some evening and weekend working.
Although its full-time, part time and/orjob share arrangements may be considered.
