The role:
A forward-thinking public sector organisation is seeking a motivated and detail-orientedAssistant Traffic Engineerto join its Highways and Transportation team. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a busy engineering design team delivering impactful and high-profile transport improvement schemes across the city.
You’ll support the delivery of infrastructure projects aligned with local and national transport strategies — from enhancing sustainable travel routes to improving accessibility and network safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supporting the design and implementation of a range of highways and traffic engineering projects, including walking and cycling schemes, bus priority corridors, congestion management, and road safety initiatives.
- Creating, modifying, and managing technical drawings using AutoCAD.
- Assisting with the design and assessment of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and traffic calming measures in line with current legislation and guidance.
- Gathering and interpreting survey data to inform designs and proposals.
- Participating in meetings and collaborating with engineers, designers, and external stakeholders.
- Ensuring all designs meet quality standards, technical specifications, and project objectives.
Whatthe client is looking for:
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Proficient in AutoCAD and confident producing technical drawings.
- Understanding of highway design principles, road geometry, drainage, and traffic management.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to prioritise, problem-solve, and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously.
- Familiarity with relevant highway design standards and regulations.
Desirable:
- Experience working with TROs or on local authority highway projects.
- Previous involvement in sustainable transport or public realm improvement schemes.
