Working as part of the Sustainability and Physics team, we are seeking a candidate with experience of achieving impressive outcomes on projects and who can help to develop and lead the Manchester sustainability and physics team.

Buro Happold’s sustainability and physics team delivers fantastic projects, ranging from the BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Platinum, NABERS 5* Workship Square - through to the net zero “Terra – Sustainability Pavilion” in Dubai. You will have the opportunity to work on both new and existing buildings across a full range of typologies, both in the UK and internationally, including working with some of the world’s most prestigious architects.
We are also active members of UK Green Building Council and World Green Building Council including advisory groups on Delivering Social Value, Circular Economy and Advancing Net Zero Renewables and Offsetting. Many staff globally are members of boards, organisations, and/or visiting lecturers at universities.
Responsibilities
- Formulating external presentations for outreach and business development purposes.
- Representing our sustainability & physics offer at business development meetings in Manchester alongside colleagues.
- Project leadership and direction/mentorship of junior team members.
- QA of deliverables.
- Providing written comments and producing reports and presentations with excellent visual and grammatical quality.
- Working as part of multidisciplinary teams (including, but not limited to attending meetings with architects, planners, government agencies and clients as the project lead) driving and embedding the sustainability and physics agenda within projects.
- Project and service support (including managing a portfolio of projects and contributing to the development of new service offers).
- Work winning and supporting partners and directors with key relationships.
- Presenting to clients and design teams.
- Passion for architectural design, sustainability and driving the Net Zero Carbon agenda within the built environment.
- Sustainable design input to a range of UK and International projects.
- Leading and growing our General Sustainability team in Manchester.
- Production of technical guidance and analysis to influence sustainability strategies (including leading workshops to help clients define their strategic sustainability brief).
Qualifications & Experience
- Creative mindset with strong graphical communication and ‘story telling’ skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an engaging presenter.
- First principles understanding of sustainable and low carbon design.
- Passion for delivering integrated architectural and engineering designs to drive the Sustainability agenda within the built environment.
- An outgoing team player with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, who enjoys engaging with others to find innovative, practicable and deliverable solutions to complex problems.
- Work independently, lead bids, mentor and line manage junior staff.
- Comfortable working in a deadline-driven environment.
- Working knowledge of wellbeing and sustainable design techniques, analysis or modelling relevant to the construction industry and an understanding of relevant legislation within the UK.
- Experience in undertaking and reviewing technical analysis, and the development of suitable responsive strategies.
- Strong facilitation and team working skills and a drive to deliver outstanding results.
- Sustainability assessment qualifications (e.g. BREEAM, WELL) and evidence of practical competence of their application.
- Relevant Degree in Engineering or Sustainability and preferably chartered with a relevant professional institution.
Preferred Skills
- Existing professional network and client base in Manchester.
- Deep knowledge of existing and emerging policy and standards for buildings.
- Proven track record in team leadership, work-winning and external relationship building.
