Aberdeenshire Council is seeking a skilled and proactive Internal Auditor to join our team, to provide Internal Audit services to Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City Councils, the respective Health and Social Care Partnerships and the North East of Scotland Pension Fund. This is a key role in supporting the Council's commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in public service delivery. You will contribute to the assurance framework that supports delivery of the Council's Priorities.

Requirements

This post is regulated work with Children and/or Protected Adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. A confirmed offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

This post has a minimum requirement of two references, one of which must be your current or most recent employer.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver risk-based internal audit reviews across a wide range of council services.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls, governance arrangements, and risk management processes.
  • Provide independent assurance to senior management and elected members via the Audit Committee.
  • Prepare clear, evidence-based audit reports with practical recommendations for improvement.
  • Support the development and delivery of the annual Internal Audit Plan in line with the Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS).
  • Advise services on control design, fraud prevention, and best practice in governance.

The Individual

About You

We\'re looking for someone who brings:

  • Minimum Higher Grade English and Mathematics or equivalent
  • Experience in a finance-related discipline.
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex findings clearly.
  • The ability to learn new skills, work with a variety of people and systems, and confidence in information handling, analysis and interpretation.
  • A commitment to ethical standards and public service values.
  • The following may be advantageous:
  • Experience in internal audit, preferably within the public or local government sector.
  • A relevant qualification (degree, HND, HNC) or working towards a professional qualification (e.g. CMIIA, CIA, ACCA, CIPFA).
