An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Wigan GP Alliance team to support services in the Wigan Borough, including vaccination sessions, MMR, cytology, and long-term condition reviews.
Your role would involve practice nurse responsibilities, long-term condition reviews, immunisations, health checks, investigations, and follow-up.
Main duties of the job
- Work independently and contribute to audits, implementing and evaluating local quality standards, policies, guidelines, and care pathways.
- Conduct clinical patient consultations at surgeries or health centres.
- Undertake clinical examinations and diagnostic investigations, including venepuncture, blood sugar monitoring, and urinalysis.
- Participate in cytology sessions.
- Provide supportive advice regarding contraception.
- Treat wounds and provide emergency first aid.
- Apply and remove dressings and undertake C&S specimens if required from the wound site.
- Offer advice, education, and information on chronic health conditions, disease management, smoking cessation, weight management, BMI assessment, and supportive referrals to other agencies such as Drug & Alcohol teams, Mental Health services, and others supporting patient care and lifestyle choices.
- Take observations, including pulse, temperature, blood pressure, SpO2, and perform skin and foot assessments.
- Administer immunisations.
- Conduct well woman and man clinics, as well as specialist clinics for diabetes and asthma.
- Delegate tasks to healthcare assistants.
- Maintain accurate records of patient consultations during clinical sessions.
- Assist GPs with minor procedures if required.
The working pattern includes sessions at our practice from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm Monday to Friday, weekend sessions from 10 am to 4 pm, and the possibility of other ad hoc sessions.
About us
We are a Primary Care provider within the Borough of Wigan, supporting general practices by delivering Enhanced and Extended Access services during evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. These sessions include LTC reviews, immunisations, cytology, and diagnostics for patients who need access outside regular hours.
New bank nurses are not required to be proficient in all elements, as mixed and single skill set sessions are available.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- NMC registered
- Degree level qualification
- Currently practicing in a Primary Care setting
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Cytology trained
- Diagnostic testing trained (e.g., phlebotomy)
- LTC review trained
