Overview

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Bioinformatics Engineer to join Genomics England. Our Senior Bioinformatics Engineers are experienced software engineers with extensive expertise in bioinformatics. They provide technical leadership at a squad level, promote best practices, mentor colleagues and develop production-grade software to address complex bioinformatics challenges.

Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics and to support researchers in understanding disease and developing new treatments. Our mission is to enable genomic healthcare and genomic research, with patients and participants at the heart of it.

Genomics England operates a blended working model with hybrid working. Most people come into the office a minimum of 2 times per month; some roles require full-time on-site presence. Office locations: Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.

Responsibilities

  • Providing technical support and leadership for squad-level projects.
  • Initiating new projects and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participating in hiring across the chapter and directorate.
  • Producing high-quality, production-standard code.
  • Leading inclusive, high-performing project teams and ensuring the right skills are in place to deliver the mission.
  • Ensuring compliance with SOPs, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Embodied leadership behaviours and fostering an inclusive culture.
  • Helping set clear stretch goals for teams and individuals and ensuring they are aligned with team goals, PDRs and Career Frameworks.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Ability to make reasoned assessments supported by evidence, experience, or knowledge to propose or challenge ideas and make decisions.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
  • Experience with software engineering best practices, bioinformatics tooling and testing.
  • Strong command of object-oriented programming and software design principles.
  • Proven experience in coaching, mentoring, and motivating team members inclusively.
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools, file formats, and standards (e.g., GA4GH, nf-core).
  • MSc or equivalent in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated coding experience and experience with genomic data.
