The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Structural Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Scotland. Our design hubs are in Edinburgh, Polmadie, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen, with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn and Huntly. Our Structures Team designs major civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland with cumulative values in excess of £1bn. Amey manages long-term trunk road network contracts and a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities and Contractors.

Recent / ongoing projects include major trunk road contracts and notable bridges and infrastructure schemes in Scotland and the UK.

The Role

As a Structural Engineer, you will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role

  • Producing technically sound engineering solutions.
  • Taking ownership and supporting the management and technical delivery of projects from start to finish.
  • Preparation of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria.
  • Supporting and guiding more junior staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and pursuing your own professional development.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Working within a locally based technical team and delivering activities within a scheme project and team portfolio.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work-winning functions.
  • Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
  • Experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
  • Good project management skills, particularly in managing multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

What You Will Bring To Us

  • Team player who questions the status quo and develops innovative engineering solutions tailored to the project's scope and environment.
  • Experience and expertise within the structures field, gained in an Assistant Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions compliant with relevant technical standards and client requirements (DMRB, Eurocodes, CIRIA, etc.).
  • Ownership of deliverables and ability to check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of CDM and risk assessment applied to design and construction.
  • Experience in managing hazards and risks on projects and applying appropriate risk mitigation.
  • Understanding of interface management and alignment of own deliverables with other disciplines.
  • Evidence toward Incorporated or Chartered status with ICE or IStructE, or an equivalent professional licence.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
