Chief Operating Officer – Distribution and UK Commercial

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an individual with strategic vision and market insight, to identify and drive efficiencies within our UK General Insurance, Distribution and UK Commercial business. You will operationalise strategy and plans, collaborating with the MD in setting and driving the UK Commercial & Distribution vision and plans to meet the short and long-term objectives.
Reporting to the Managing Director of UKGI, UK Commercial & Distribution, you will operationalise the business strategy and plans in a timely manner; and make sure that the end-to-end business operation is functioning in the most effective and efficient way (for success today, and over the plan period). You will have end to end ownership across Operations, Transformation and Change and will be responsible for driving efficiency, enhancing operational processes, and supporting the overall growth and success of our business – working closely with various senior leadership teams and departments to streamline operations, manage risk, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
A bit about the job
You will have end-to-end ownership across Customer, Client & Change, most notably:
- BAU Change – assessing and enhancing the efficiency of end-to-end operational procedures and processes – identifying areas for process enhancement and taking steps to improve them.
- Transformation – developing strategies for the growth and efficiency of the business. Responsible for the creation of a clear roadmap for transformative change (as appropriate).
- Technology and Innovation – in partnership with the Director of Digital Innovation and IT Business Partner, identifying and evaluating technological advancements, automation opportunities, and digital solutions to optimise operations and enhance customer experience.
- Responsibility for identification and strategic coordination of key projects and business critical activities – as determined by the MD.
- Working closely with the GI Transformation Director and aligned Finance Business Partner – making sure that sufficient investment is budgeted, and benefits are tracked/delivered.
- You will lead a team of c.170 FTE, providing strong leadership and mentorship, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous learning. Recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent, ensuring a high-performing team capable of delivering results.
- Performance monitoring to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor operational performance. Regularly analysing data and providing insights to drive continuous improvement in operational processes and productivity.
- You will have strong working relationships with 1st and 2nd line risk partners. Overseeing risk management practices, ensuring the organisation operates within acceptable risk parameters. Developing risk mitigation strategies and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and industry best practices.
- Leadership of the Operational Risk and Governance team.
Skills and experience we’re looking for:
- Significant senior insurance industry role experience, operating in a matrix organisation.
- Strong business acumen and commercial perspective, with in depth knowledge of the UK Commercial insurance market dynamics and associated regulatory frameworks.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and implement operational strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to leverage data to drive operational improvements.
- Excellent project management / facilitation skills.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively at all levels of the organisation.
- Proven track record of successfully leading and managing operational functions in the insurance sector.
- Strong leadership abilities, with experience in building and leading high-performing teams.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to a fast-paced and evolving industry landscape.
- In-depth knowledge of risk management practices and compliance requirements within the insurance industry.
