Job Description

We are looking for someone to help us contribute towards maintaining a vibrant and stable voluntary and community sector in Cambridge. You would be working as part of a small Community Investment team, which supports groups through the allocation and management of grant funding and other forms of financial and in-kind support.

The Council is committed to building an inclusive City, tackling poverty and inequality, where success and wealth is shared locally and fairly. The Community Investment team plays a key role in this ambition through its grants and social investment programmes. We are keen to build on what we have already achieved and are planning changes to the way that we invest in our communities. We want to bring more stability to the voluntary and community sector to enable groups to focus their efforts on delivering their services and activities: you can help us achieve those aims.

You would be responsible advising on matters relating to the governance and financial affairs of voluntary and community organisations to make sure Council funds are targeted where they are needed most. This would involve reviewing and analysing financial documents to inform those decisions.

You should have experience in financial management and be up to date with current good practice and the legal requirements around accounting for all types of voluntary sector organisations.

You would also provide financial advice and support directly to voluntary and community organisations seeking investment from the Council. You may occasionally need to visit groups or attend their Board meetings to gain an understanding of their practice and financial position.

You would review grant monitoring reports to ensure that Council funds have been spent appropriately. You may need to use your communication and persuasive skills to ensure any grant underspends or misappropriated funds are returned to the Council.

You would assist in the preparation of grant payments to successful applicant groups and reconcile grants awarded with payments made. You would therefore need to have excellent numeracy skills and high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

The Council is currently building a digital grants platform to help us manage our grants more effectively and to make the process of applying for a grant and reporting back on how the grant is spent, as easy as possible. You would be part of the team using the platform and making any ongoing improvements.

The Council is also developing its approach to ensuring our suppliers are giving ‘social value’ back to the City. You would assist with the process of directing some of that resource to the community groups that need it, through our social value platform.

The role requires you to be excellent at prioritising and organising your work to ensure that the grants programme timeframes are met. As such we are looking for someone who can work full time, although we would be open to alternatives for the right candidate.

What we can offer:

Hours: This is a full-time role, for 37 hours per week.

Although the role is advertised as full time, if you believe you have the skills and experience to join us and would like to discuss different working patterns, please do get in touch.

Contract: Permanent

Salary: £36,124 - £40,476 per annum (City Pay Band 5), pro rata for part time.

Location: This is flexible – working in Cambridge on site or at one of our offices or working from home. You will be able to balance your work location accordingly.
