Your Role: As our next Assistant Lawyer to join the Birmingham office, you will be working alongside Partner, Marsha Godwin. You will work closely with Marsha and the team in handling a mixture of complex, high value EL, PL and RTA multi-track claims. The role will also include engaging with senior claims handlers in long-standing insurance clients and assisting Marsha in activities that enhance and develop Keoghs’ profile, which will enhance your own development and career and provide advancement opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- As Assistant to Marsha: you will work as part of a small team progressing each file from receipt of papers from the insurer client to resolution of the claim.
- Manage a caseload of complex injury claims including high value multi-track and catastrophic injury claims involving brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and fatal claims.
- Communicate with insurer clients, address queries and provide updates as the matter progresses.
- Forensic analysis of voluminous quantum evidence, preparing chronologies, identifying anomalies and other relevant information across sources of evidence.
- Apply knowledge of complex injury symptomology to identify issues within medical records to instruct medical experts and highlight key issues.
- Critical analysis of liability evidence and identify gaps.
- Draft concise technical advice on indemnity, liability, quantum and causation; discuss strategies with the Lead Lawyer.
- Identify next steps, discuss with the Lead Lawyer, and take action as agreed.
- Interview witnesses and draft statements.
- Liaise with insured, insurer, witnesses and other parties.
- Draft pleadings and applications.
- Instruct counsel and attend conferences, JSMs, mediations (remote or in person).
- Attend court in person or by telephone; attend trials and settlement conferences as required.
- Deliver agreed performance targets and quality standards.
- Delegate tasks to a Complex Injury Paralegal and contribute to their development.
- Maintain case management systems with up-to-date management information for clients.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Qualified solicitor, CILEX or have proven legal experience in a similar role
- Experience of indemnity, liability and quantum
- Claimant background considered if you have significant large loss / CAT experience
- Well-rounded lawyer with deep understanding of case law, litigation practice & process and Court Practice Rules
- Fully engaged in personal and team development
