Overview of Role:
The Compliance Analyst will support the London branches of National Bank of Canada and National Financial Inc. (“NBCCM”), focusing on surveillance, regulatory reporting, and compliance governance. This role blends traditional compliance responsibilities with data analytics and reporting, contributing to the firm’s control framework across various financial products and jurisdictions.
The role reports to a Senior Compliance Officer and is suited for candidates with a foundational understanding of financial markets and a keen interest in compliance and data analytics.
Compliance Oversight
Under the direction of the Compliance team in London – an ideal candidate will:
- Support core compliance processes including but not limited to conflicts of interest, data protection, fitness and probity, and protected disclosures.
- Assist with interpreting and applying key regulations (e.g. MiFID II, EMIR, MAR, SMCR, CRD VI, DORA) across jurisdictions.
- Respond to compliance queries from trading desks across asset classes such as Fixed Income, FX, Rates, Equities and Treasury.
- Maintain compliance records in line with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Contribute to a culture of transparency, accountability, and operational excellence.
Surveillance, Reporting & Analytics
- Conduct daily and thematic surveillance of trading activity to identify potential market abuse or conduct breaches.
- Assist in preparing and validating regulatory reports (e.g. EMIR, MiFIR, SFTR).
- Collaborate with global compliance and IT teams to ensure surveillance coverage across relevant asset classes.
- Support the development of dashboards and reporting tools using Power BI and Excel.
- Help automate data processes using tools such as VBA, Python, or SQL (knowledge or interest in these tools is a plus).
- Participate in industry working groups and regulatory consultations (where appropriate).
General knowledge, Skills & Experience
The following are desired or beneficial for the role:
- A proactive and dependable approach to work, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability, is highly desired.
- Interest in regulatory risk management and compliance frameworks.
- Familiarity with financial markets regulation.
- Exposure to trading environments and compliance functions.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn tools such as Excel, Power BI, VBA, Python, SQL.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- High integrity and professionalism, with a commitment to confidentiality and sound judgement.
- Willingness to learn and stay current on regulatory developments.
