Overview
Senior Design Engineer – Contractor: responsible for the design of a wide range of complex engine components with a focus on off‑highway, large engine, heavy‑duty and marine areas. Will work closely with the Chief Designer and take ownership of a particular mechanical design system as identified by the Chief Designer.
Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of components through concept, definitive and detail design phases.
- Carry out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, basic stress calculations, FMEA, 2D layouts, 2D detailing, tolerance stacks as required.
- Agree the design approach with the project Chief or Lead Designer.
- Prepare system and component specifications ensuring design meets the requirements.
- Create 2D drawings for manufacture or purchase, assembly drawings and bill of materials.
- Carry out design change requests in a timely manner.
- Ensure fit and function of parts or systems and their interaction with other systems.
- Maintain up‑to‑date layout drawings.
- Develop component or system design plans.
- Meet design timing plans for assigned tasks.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly.
- Report progress of assigned tasks to project management teams, chief designer or engineering manager.
- Produce technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects.
- Highlight all mechanical technical risks to the chief designer or engineering manager.
- Prepare and present mechanical designs at design reviews.
- Generate minutes from design reviews, if required.
- Keep up‑to‑date with latest manufacturing techniques, drawing standards, technology trends and design tool developments.
- Liaise with suppliers and other Ricardo departments to ensure required information is available and customer requests are dealt with timely.
- Liaise directly with the customer as required.
- Ensure design files and documentation are kept up-to-date and stored according to department procedures.
Qualifications
- Degree (Bachelor or Masters) in Mechanical Engineering or similar field, or equivalent experience.
- Experience as a Design Engineer.
- Broad mechanical design knowledge with experience in engine design and castings, housings, air paths, cranktrain, cylinder head, cylinder block, fuel systems, etc.
- Preferred experience in off‑highway, heavy‑duty diesel, industrial, medium speed, marine or large engine areas.
- Experienced user of CREO.
- PLM experience, especially PTC Windchill.
- Familiarity with technical specifications.
- Ability to understand and produce technical drawings to high standard with GD&T competency.
- Deliver designs to specified deadlines and achieve required timescales.
- Proactive, confident, able to take the lead in challenging situations.
- Good communication skills – dealing with employees, external clients & suppliers.
- Able to communicate effectively in English at all levels.
- Self‑motivated, team player, effective problem solver.
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and with minimum supervision.
