Octopus Energy UK – Finance /
Full-time /
Hybrid
After starting a mere 10 years ago, Octopus is the largest energy supplier in the UK. We’ve built the technology to serve millions of energy customers and handle the billions of pounds worth of customer and third party transactions that this entails. As Octopus has grown, so too has the complexity, variation and scale of data that we use as a finance team.
Furthermore the finance team is currently undergoing significant transformation with a new accounting platform, OCR system and expense system all on the way. We’ve taken transformation so far that we’ve even been awarded “Transformation team of the year” at the recent GenCFO Finance Awards. In line with this transformation we are looking to build better tools and analysis that supports this growth.
As such, we are looking for a Data Analyst to work at the intersection between data, accounting and finance, using their experience in data to build great data tools to streamline processes and collate, analyse and report on this data. They’ll need a passion for working with data to bring insight and efficiency to the teams around them whilst excelling at listening, understanding challenges and formulating pragmatic solutions.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work at the intersection of finance and data in an award winning team for a high growth business that is at the forefront of the net zero transition.
What You'll Do
- Work throughout Octopus Energy Group to build solutions for teams ranging from our UK energy retail team to International retail and services teams;
- Become a subject matter expert on our finance systems and data;
- Build, maintain and assure reports for the finance teams;
- Maintain data models used to report on financials from our CRM system (Kraken);
- Help with one off deep dive analyses and reconciliations using SQL and Python;
- Build and maintain dashboards and data apps using Streamlit for the finance teams;
- Build new dbt SQL data models for use in dashboards and month end reports;
- Provide analytical and data support for financial audits and regulatory reporting;
- Work closely with a broad range of teams at Octopus
- A curious and self driven mentality - when faced with a new problem is capable of seeking out an answer without lots of help and support;
- Highly data literate and numerate - can make sense of lots of data and shape it into a coherent story;
- Has great attention to detail;
- Learns fast and is enthusiastic about learning new technologies;
- Great communicator, can explain complex technical problems to non-technical teams and also understand problems faced by non-technical teams and distill an effective and efficient tech solution;
- Experience with SQL, Python, Excel and Google sheets
- Accounting experience - has a good grasp of accounting principles and experience of the month end process
- Experience with building dashboards using Streamlit
- Experience working with accounting systems (e.g. Netsuite)
- Experience working in a modern cloud data warehouse environment
- Experience working collaboratively on codebases using git
- Experience building models using dbt
