About Us

IMPOWER is the country's largest independent management consultancy, focused exclusively on helping public sector clients improve services for local communities and get the best use of public funds. We work with local and national government to improve how public services are delivered, from children\'s and adult social care to healthcare and place-based economic development. We drive transformation of services to deliver better outcomes for the public.

We use our EDGEWORK methodology to enable collaborative problem solving and sustainable change beyond traditional project management approaches. Our team combines applied behavioural science, insight, creativity and relationship-building to transform public service delivery. If you have a passion for improving public services and the energy to tackle challenging problems, we invite you to join us.

About The Team

The Applied Analytics Team represents a critical function, providing data analytics to deliver meaningful, actionable insights that inform our work with clients. The team (currently 8 people) uses tools from Excel to AI, with curiosity at the core to identify insights that drive positive change. We support client teams with demand and capacity modelling and NLP-based sentiment analysis to identify priority areas for citizen experience improvements.

About The Role

Our clients face political, social and economic pressures, so high-quality information and insights are essential for solutions. We often handle large data sets with anomalies from multiple sources or when data has been mis-migrated. We gather and clean data before analysing it to identify themes or root causes, enabling meaningful, long-term solutions.

As an analyst, you will use data tools and techniques to clean data, generate reports, and create dashboards and visualisations that tell a story of the insights. These insights will support decision-making for individual client teams and the wider IMPOWER team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to determine data and analytical needs for projects; identify required data sources.
  • Request relevant data using established templates and processes; flag barriers to data access promptly.
  • Perform basic data cleansing to ensure quality, identify biases, and handle missing data; utilise Excel models and third-party tools to support analysis.
  • Create bespoke analyses using Excel, Python and R to extract insights and present them clearly, with attention to accuracy and impact.
  • Collaborate with the wider business to develop broader insights and ideas using existing data to support thought leadership and propositions.
  • Manage and configure existing models to suit different client requirements.
  • Translate data analysis results into presentations, dashboards and visualisations using tools like Power BI to convey insights effectively.

About You

  • Bachelor\'s degree in Maths, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or relevant experience in a junior role (internship or post-graduate first role). This is not a developer or engineering role but requires strong data manipulation and analysis skills.
  • Ability to use data to draw insights and support idea generation; a natural curiosity to explore data and ask questions to find right solutions.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and with incomplete or incorrect data sets; able to synthesize into meaningful information.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel; knowledge of Power BI and other data visualisation tools is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of data cleansing and transformation techniques; experience with tools such as Power Query is desirable.
  • Understanding of data management and data governance principles.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced project team.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; willing to contribute to discussions as a subject matter expert.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organised.
  • Local government or health sector knowledge is desirable.
