We are looking for an experienced analyst with excellent communication skills to join the Data Directorate at Companies House as our Data Quality Lead.

As Data Quality Lead, you will be responsible for leading a programme of work improving understanding and measurement of data quality. You will also work on supporting data transformation projects and contribute to business improvements to support Companies House in achieving its strategic goals.

The use of effective analysis within operational services and policy areas has been growing over recent years. Companies House are now moving into a place where more sophisticated analytical methods are being used to develop our services and inform our strategic decisions. You will play a key role in understanding and influencing the quality of that data.

Working with other parts of the wider team and across the organisation, you will work to develop Companies House understanding of our data quality and develop measurement and monitoring pipelines. You will lead the way in improving data quality at Companies House through focused data quality initiatives and long-term strategic changes.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Shape the embedding of a framework to standardise our approach to assess and report data quality in the organisation.
  • Help set the direction across Companies House on data quality, aligning to the strategic priorities of the organisation.
  • Work with project teams to create a baseline quality assessment for new projects.
  • Create and influence internal and external stakeholder relationships, to align goals, understand and resolve issues and ensure delivery.
  • Work in an organisation committed to the development of all staff.

Where you will be working

You will be aligned to either our Cardiff, Belfast or Edinburgh office, where you will be expected to attend on a regular basis. We are currently using a hybrid approach to the way we work with the current expectation being one day per week on site.

Person specification

We are looking for someone who will:

  • Enjoy investigating and solving problems through both discussion and technical investigation.
  • Work to understand the current organisational data landscape, identify future needs and create solutions around data quality to enable our corporate vision to be achieved.
  • Be capable of working in the detail to understand challenges around Data Quality but also drive strategic improvements in this area.
  • Inspire your team to creatively solve problems and collaborate to find strategic solutions.
  • Understand data quality dimensions and how to apply these to a dataset to measure whether data is fit for purpose.
  • Be familiar with data quality frameworks and how they are implemented. You will have coding skills (SQL, Python or R preferred) and experience with application and creation of reproducible analytical pipelines.
  • Have the ability to think analytically about data - identifying key trends and communicating findings to non-technical colleagues.
  • Be confident communicating and working with colleagues across and at all levels of the organisation.
  • Work collaboratively with cross government data communities to ensure Companies House’s strategic direction is aligned with the National Data Strategy.
  • Occasionally deputise for the Head of Data Strategy

You will also have:

  • Excellent problem-solving/critical-thinking skills
  • Strong analytical thinking

You will also be required to have and be assessed on the following:

  • Experience in data management, data analysis or data engineering that can be applied to assessing and improving data quality.
  • Experience of collaborative working to solve strategic problems around data.
  • Experience of working with a broad range of stakeholders both internal and external.
  • Experience of creating data pipelines to automate production processes and improve overall data quality.
  • Experience of delivering change improvement through projects.

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Applied understanding of data quality practices, approaches and data quality dimensions.
  • Good data analysis skills and good coding skills e.g. Python / Java / SQL.
  • Familiarity with data profiling and cleansing methods and tools, and familiarity with reproducible analytical pipelines and relational databases
  • Desirable: Experience with data visualization/business intelligence Familiarity with DAMA methodology (data management association)/Government Data Quality Framework Familiarity with cloud platforms e.g. Amazon Web Service Familiarity with Snowflake

To be eligible for this role you also need to meet our Nationality requirements which are outlined below and also successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Clearance (SC) before they can be appointed. To gain (SC) you will need to have been a UK resident for a minimum of 3 years out of the last 5 years.
