Deputy Postgraduate Dean - South West

2 Days Old

Overview

Applications are invited for the role of Deputy Postgraduate Dean within NHSE South West. The role provides local and regional leadership of the delivery of high-quality cross-specialty and multi-professional training, supporting the Regional Postgraduate Dean in delivering corporate, statutory and non-statutory functions. It focuses on improving patient and learner safety and experience and ensuring effective educational outcomes.

The appointment will be made on the basis of a part-time secondment to NHS England, alongside existing employment with an NHS Trust in the South West geographical footprint. The contract is up until 31 October 2026, initially due to the transformation programme as we look to integrate NHS England into the Department of Health and Social Care.

Candidates invited to interview will participate in a 30-minute session with a stakeholder panel on Monday 20 October and a formal interview on Tuesday 21 October.

Main duties

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Direct management and support of the Heads of Specialty Schools.
  • Direct management of resident doctors with professional standards, complex training and performance issues and support of the Heads of Schools in managing doctors in training experiencing difficulties.
  • Engagement with national workstreams including medical training review.
  • Support of the Integrated academic training programme.
  • Leading on local delivery of national programmes such as the 10 year health plan and the three shifts from analogue to digital; sickness to prevention; and hospital to community.
  • Leading on regional priorities including including specialty training programme configuration.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced clinician with a thorough understanding of education and training across the region. They will also have strong leadership and communication skills and be able to work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.

If you are successful at interview, we will run an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) in the Electronic Staff Record system (ESR). This transfer gathers valuable information from a previous or current NHS employer to support the onboarding process, including statutory and mandatory competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You will have the opportunity throughout the recruitment process to inform us if you do not consent.
