The Role

As Design Manager, you will lead the design management process within project teams, ensuring delivery aligns with client specifications and governance standards. Your key responsibilities include:

Tender Stage

  • Review Tender / Remit documentation and establish AmcoGiffen design scope and responsibilities, including identification of BIM requirements.
  • Review of procedures and suggest improvements.
  • Assisting with the consultant selection process and ensuring AmcoGiffen design scope is allocated to an appropriate designer.
  • Preparing the Design Brief.
  • Ensure an appropriate Category of Design Check is identified.
  • Agreeing the design programme and monitoring the progress of design through the pre-contract phase.
  • Acting as the main interface between the Design Consultant and the bid or project team, to ensure the flow of information.
  • Reviewing quotations / proposals from designers against the design brief and ensuring that all required scope items are priced and programmed.
  • Ensure project risks and design assumptions are communicated to the bid team.
  • Identify and raise Technical Queries for design and BIM related items.
  • Assist with reviewing CDM Competency Assessments from designers.
  • Assist with writing / preparing Tender submission responses.

Contract Stage

  • Conducting and facilitating the Design Start-up Meeting.
  • Assist the commercial team in preparing information for the designer appointment.
  • Complete Design / Engineering Management Plan.
  • Ensure information to complete design is identified and exchanged at the appropriate time and in accordance with the project BIM Execution plan where applicable.
  • Ensuring that the design is checked and certified appropriately.
  • Challenging the design consultant on residual risks and communicating them to the Project Delivery Team.
  • Monitor the progress of design delivery against agreed programme.
  • Conduct interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Identify and raise Technical Queries/Requests for Information for design and BIM related items.
  • Conducting Design Reviews.
  • Ensure change is identified and managed in accordance with the change procedure, working with the commercial teams.
  • Review designer performance and record scores in performance database.

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience as Design Manager in a multi-disciplinary rail and civils contracting environment.
  • Extensive experience managing multi-disciplinary civil and rail projects.
  • Degree, HNC, HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent technical experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical disciplines related to solar and EV projects is advantageous.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
