Flexible working will be part of the discussion at offer stage.Why Join the TeamWorking to the Chief Content Officer and supporting the BBC’s Value for All strategy, the Director of Entertainment will be responsible for growing both new and existing content brands, setting an editorial strategy that effectively drives the BBC’s mission of informing, educating and entertaining and its ambitions to reach, portray and represent all the UK. You’ll set and communicate the portfolio and its editorial objectives, building strong relationships with internal and external key partners.Entertainment brings mass audiences to BBC iPlayer and our linear channels, offering shared viewing experiences that appeal across generations. As well as tentpole programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing, The Traitors, Race Across The World and big national events, we champion light-hearted, much loved funny formats, everything from Would I Lie to You to The Wheel, as well as our diverse mix of daytime and early peak content, from Scam Interceptors to House of Games and The One Show.Your focus will be on bringing people together through this wide variety of shows. You’ll play a pivotal role in championing creatives both on and off screen, and in delivering distinctive programming that brings joy to audiences across the UK. You’ll work with suppliers from across the UK’s Nations and Regions, ensuring we reflect the worlds of audience, building on the growth of our production pipeline and continuing to create new brands that thrive. You’ll be passionate about evolving our content to reflect audience behaviour, proactive about how our programmes show up on our digital platforms and have the ability to join up our offer across the BBC portfolio.Your Key Responsibilities and ImpactLead and own the process of commissioning for the genre/portfolio within the agreed buying model. Develop and deliver a strategy that meets the needs and expectations of our diverse audiences, representing and portraying all of the UK.Work collaboratively with the Director, BBC iPlayer & Channels, meeting routinely with the portfolio team to discuss programme developments, commissioning and recommissioning decisions, scheduling, curation and release strategies, editorial issues arising from programme release and audience performance on BBC platforms and services.With the Genre Heads, and the iPlayer and Channels teams, greenlight and deliver commissions which are consistent with portfolio/genre strategies, boost the range and quality of our content and serve the particular needs, interests and viewing patterns relevant to the specific genre. You will also work closely with the Nations’ Heads.Determine priorities, style, tone and presentation to ensure delivery of a distinctive and complementary schedule which maximises audience reach and appreciation.Direct the development process, determining priorities and encouraging a risk-taking approach to ideas.Be an advocate and ensure that diversity is at the heart of everything that we do and is embedded into every aspect of the business including our output, promoting inclusion within the department and championing diversity both on and off screen.Ensure the output meets all editorial compliance requirements and BBC editorial guidelines, and that we meet our regulatory requirements.Role model and set highest standards of behaviour of respect, inclusion and collaboration.Champion and develop world-class commissioning teams which reflects our audiences.Provide line management and build staff engagement. Ensure that the genre/portfolio is resourced in the most efficient and cost-effective way.In partnership with others, develop and sustain a strong and continuously invigorated pan UK supplier base, continually seeking out and nurturing original talent.Establish and nurture relationships with a range of UK and Global partners to increase the scale, reach and impact of our content.Accountable for the overall financial performance of the genre/portfolio with the support of the relevant Finance team, determining priorities, such as the allocation of development spend.Maximise value for money, ensuring that the most cost-effective programming is commissioned on the basis of analysis of target audience needs.
