Overview

Director of Process Risk Reduction and Operational Risk Analytics – American Express. The role sits within Operational Risk Management (ORM) and is part of a diverse, high-performing team focused on identifying systemic and emerging operational risks, performing analytics and reporting, and embedding effective operational risk management in day-to-day operations. The position involves extensive collaboration with multiple partners across business units, functional areas, and geographies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple teams to design new analytics solutions and enhance existing solutions that strengthen the identification and management of systemic and emerging operational risks.
  • Lead a diverse global team (local and offshore), providing oversight across the full engagement lifecycle, including planning, mobilization, requirements gathering, delivery management, communication, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement advanced risk analytics solutions and tools to identify, quantify, and monitor operational risks, leveraging data-driven insights to identify trends and assess potential impacts on the organization.
  • Oversee the design and development of metrics, analytics, and visualization solutions, including data modeling, transformation processes, integration of business intelligence tools, and ensuring robust testing, release, and end-user adoption.
  • Manage enterprise-level program governance by partnering with enterprise data and business intelligence centers of excellence, working groups, and third-party providers; stay current on new solution rollouts, features, and licensing; coordinate troubleshooting, support, and continuous improvement during project implementations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in analytics and risk quantification, with expertise in advanced analytics, data science, statistical modeling, and data-driven risk assessment.
  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale, data-intensive projects, with hands-on experience in Big Data platforms such as BigQuery, Databricks, or Snowflake.
  • Advanced technical proficiency in SQL, Python, and related tools for large-scale data querying, processing, and transformation.
  • Strong knowledge of data warehousing concepts, with proven expertise in both relational and dimensional data modeling.
  • Deep experience in ETL process design and development, including metric creation, data transformation, and data quality best practices.
  • Proven track record with business intelligence (BI) tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, ThoughtSpot, Alteryx, Cognos), including configuration, customization, and coding.
  • Solid background in operational risk management, ideally within Risk, Internal Audit, or Control Management functions, with a strong understanding of operational risk frameworks and data ecosystems.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate technical insights into actionable recommendations across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams, including global/offshore groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of applications, data, and infrastructure architecture disciplines.
  • Experience working in large financial institutions, with exposure to regulatory, operational, and financial risks unique to the sector.
  • Strong understanding of the financial services regulatory environment and its implications for operational risk management.
