The role of a Disclosure Officer is vital in enabling the Environment Agency to conduct thorough investigations into criminal activities related to environmental offences, which are central to our mission to protect and improve the environment.

As a Disclosure Officer, you will be part of the national team within the National Environmental Crime Unit, handling serious environmental crime cases and water investigations, ensuring compliance with the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 and related legislation.

You will act as the principal disclosure officer on specific cases, collaborating with investigating officers in area teams and legal services, building strong relationships to provide optimal service.

You will also advise on disclosure practices for less complex investigations.

The role involves managing complex investigations with large volumes of evidence, ensuring proper handling according to legislation.

The team

The disclosure team is part of the National Environmental Crime Unit, managing major investigations into environmental offences, waste criminality, and water-related investigations. This area is growing, and the team is established to handle material generated during investigations in accordance with legislation and best practices.

Experience and skills required

• Experience as a Principal Disclosure Officer, preparing unused schedules for court proceedings.
• Knowledge of the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.

Desirable skills and experience

• High computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Excel and large database management.
• Knowledge of criminal investigations and related legislation, such as Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and Regulation of Investigative Powers Act 2000.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to produce precise reports within deadlines.
• Effective communication skills adaptable to diverse audiences across wide geographical areas.
• Experience managing extensive, complex workloads independently.
