Job Description:
We are looking for a Commercial Lead to join our Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) team as we strive to transform and connect the global energy market. This role offers deep exposure to the inner workings of a sophisticated trading book and positions the candidate for future roles in trading leadership or senior individual contributor posts across commercial or interfacing group functions.
In ST&S, we play a central role in bp’s strategy, creating value for bp and our shareholders by integrating along and across our oil, gas and lower carbon value chains. We connect energy producers, suppliers, markets and customers to keep energy flowing today.
Global Distillates Trading and Origination (GDIST) is part of the ST&S Refined Products Trading organization. We trade Fuel Oil, Gasoil, Diesel, Biofuels, and Jet Fuel globally, leveraging bp’s assets and third-party relationships across key sectors including Aviation, Marine, Ground Fuels, and Lubricants. Our team operates from trading hubs in London, Singapore, and Chicago, with regional representatives in markets such as the Middle East, Australia, Indonesia, China, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.
GDIST is accountable for:
- Handling and optimizing the supply and trading portfolios for our group partners Air bp and FVC, covering all middle & heavy distillate and biodiesel grades
- Entrepreneurial physical trading of middle & heavy distillates to generate value for the group
- Originating commercial solutions to decarbonize our customer base across marine, aviation, and ground fuels
- Executing paper trades and handling risk for the group, while entrepreneurially trading associated paper markets to deliver value
In the role, you will work directly with a team of trading analysts to ensure accurate and timely deal capture and T0 exposure reporting within bp’s systems of record for the Distillates trading desk.
You will bring technical expertise to the on-bench trading analysts supporting traders in monetizing commercial value through structured trading activities. This includes managing pricing options, post-deal management for complex transactions, customer collaboration, and analytical support for live origination projects. You will also play a key role in developing trading analyst capabilities.
The position is based in London and reports to the Distillates Commercial Manager, while also working closely with regional traders, support functions, and commercial leads across Chicago, Singapore, and ST&S RSOs. You will collaborate on arb flows, self-funding transactions, and process standardization.
Key Accountabilities

- Support analysts in delivering daily exposure, T0 P&L, and other commercial activities aligned to bench strategy
- Oversee issue resolution within T0 validation and FTS handover processes, ensuring adherence to best practices and internal policy
- Champion continuous improvement efforts to simplify and streamline processes
- Provide coverage support across the analyst team as required
- Coordinate and oversee self-funding transactions for GDIST, supporting cash delivery for the bp Group
- Collaborate with Commercial Managers to implement and embed new ways of working across the team
- Experience in commodity trading, either in a trading/commercial analyst or commodity risk role
- Strong knowledge of commodity markets, trading strategies, value generation, and risk management
- Technical understanding of physical trading strategies
- Ability to resolve complex issues using sound commercial judgement
- Self-directed with strong prioritization and organizational skills
