Economic Crime Unit Manager - 32059

New Yesterday

We are seeking a Manager to lead our Economic Crime Unit (ECU), part of the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The successful candidate will lead a specialist team dedicated to removing the financial benefit from criminals.

Overview

The ECU Manager will be the strategic lead for the management of financial investigations to ensure compliance with the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA). You will work proactively with a focus on continually improving and enhancing how we work, and you will lead across multiple internal teams and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership for two Team Leaders (Asset Denial Team and Money Laundering Investigation Team) and a Senior Financial Intelligence Officer; guide performance and work delivery.
  • Lead and coordinate financial investigations to reduce criminal financial gain, ensuring alignment with POCA and EA priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Investigatory Teams, Intelligence & Partnerships, Legal) and external partners (Police, National Crime Agency, HMRC) and influence senior-level stakeholders to support EA priorities.
  • Support the wider organisation in improving processes and understanding POCA; share lessons learned and advise enforcement officers nationwide.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of technical documentation and build capability within the team.

Team and Environment

The ECU consists of two teams – Asset Denial Team and Money Laundering Investigations Team – comprising Financial Investigators, Financial Intelligence Officers and Crime Analysts. It is a nationally dispersed team working with enforcement staff and partners across the country to tackle serious, complex criminality involving organised crime networks.

Experience and Skills

  • Exceptional leadership skills, with experience in leading a dispersed team.
  • Strong understanding of financial investigations and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
  • Experience in law enforcement, with knowledge of the National Intelligence Model.
  • Effective communication, including giving feedback, managing performance, and building relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise a varied workload, and identify areas for improvement to lead changes in working practices.
  • Experience developing and enhancing the capability of a team and its individuals.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid working role requiring some travel across the country for meetings and operational duties. Incident response is a central part of our work, and you may be required to have an incident role and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident (additional payment may apply). Training and workplace adjustments are available to support you.

Interviews will take place w/c 3 November 2025. For further information, contact: Emma Viner, Enforcement & Investigations Manager – emma.viner@environment-agency.gov.uk.
