The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is leading the transformation of Great Britain's energy network toward a zero‑carbon future. NESO is seeking an Economics Engineer to join the Strategic Network Development team, contributing to cost‑benefit analysis and economic assessments that underpin investment decisions for the transmission network.
About the role
As part of the Economics Assessment team you will:
Use pan‑European market models such as PLEXOS to evaluate the impact of projects and policies on network operation costs.
Develop tools and models—including Python scripts—to automate and improve the robustness and timeliness of analyses.
Lead new analysis projects and model development efforts.
Represent NESO in cross‑industry work, ensuring data integrity and presenting findings to stakeholders, industry panels, and regulatory bodies.
Document processes for repeatability and transparency, while overseeing, challenging, and advising team members.
Contribute to network planning documents such as "Beyond 2030" and the Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP).
About You
Career experience in economics, data science or analysis, ideally with exposure to the energy industry.
A logical, creative, and practical approach to problem solving, able to deconstruct complex issues.
High level of computer literacy – advanced Excel, SQL, VBA, and Python are required.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of conveying key messages to internal and external stakeholders.
Experience developing analysis tools or using data science packages.
