Embedded Software Engineer

Warrington - Must be NW based to work on site 3 or 4 days per week

Focus 5 Recruitment is working with an exciting software business to help recruit an Embedded Software Engineer. The company has recently secured two large contracts with international Mobile Network Operators. We are seeking candidates experienced in producing small, efficient code suitable for mobile SIM cards.

The Embedded Software Engineers will be responsible for the entire development lifecycle as part of a team.

Details of Embedded Software Engineer role

• Develop embedded Java code optimized for SBC (Small Board Computer) environments, such as JavaCard.
• Ensure compliance with 3GPP and ETSI specifications related to mobile telecommunications, OTA platforms, protocols, and security.
• Possess expertise in embedded software development, understanding how compilers manage code in Flash/ROM, semi-permanent variables in Flash, and transient variables in RAM.
• Understand how embedded operating systems handle stack space, RAM, and Flash, aiming to minimize resource usage.
• Produce efficient, small-sized code due to limited RAM on SIM cards.
• Recognize the importance of atomic operations and when they are necessary.
• Develop code that distributes CPU load over time to prevent overburdening the host handset.

Desirable experience (not mandatory) for Embedded Software Engineer

• Experience with SIM cards, either working for a SIM vendor or Mobile Network Operator, or with payment cards.
• Familiarity with SIM specifications from ETSI and 3GPP.
• Experience with IDEs such as Netbeans or Eclipse, and ideally the Oracle toolchain for Javacard.

Your background should include developing embedded software in Java, C, or C++, with some knowledge of higher-level software stack development. Mentoring junior engineers and problem-solving for customers, even with new technologies, are valued skills.

The role is hybrid; candidates should be within commuting distance of Warrington. The company works in Agile, with daily Scrums at 9 am.
