Engineering Manager | Payments

Awaze Manchester, England, United Kingdom

Position: Engineering Manager – Payments

We’re entering an exciting new phase of our tech and product strategy, with a focus on innovation, experimentation, and conversion at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is to elevate the web and mobile experience for our guests and owners, driving seamless journeys across all our group companies.

To achieve our goals, we’re looking to make some key hires. Are you ready to be part of our continued transformation and help shape the future of the travel industry?

Overview

Our Payments Team is the "single source of truth" for transactions across our entire group network. The team recently launched Apple Pay Express (an industry first) and is now developing more innovative greenfield solutions across our payments and checkout estate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and act as the technical authority to a full stack team responsible for building and supporting innovative and core Payment solutions (Payment integrations with banks & orchestrator, Payment transaction services, Scheduling services, Vouchers & discounts and enabling multiple payment methods)
  • Champion engineering best practices such as pair and mob programming, CI/CD, TDD, and cloud-native architectures
  • Support a learning culture through mentoring grads, juniors, and mid-level engineers
  • Collaborate with engineers across our international tech teams
  • Operate what you build—reliability and DevOps is everyone’s job
  • Actively contribute to the wider Awaze tech community

What we’re looking for / Qualifications

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager who’s passionate about inspiring those around them. You should be someone who thrives on solving complex problems and knows that the right solution should drive the tech—not the other way around.

We don’t expect you to tick every box, but experience in a mixture of the following is great:

  • Currently working as an Engineering Manager or Tech Lead in a product/customer-driven environment, leading a small team (5) of full stack engineers
  • Extensive background in high-volume, scalable distributed systems
  • Experience with cloud services (ideally AWS), Infra-as-Code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, and best practices for scalable infrastructure
  • Solid background in Payments & API technologies plus knowledge of Typescript and Node is preferable
  • Ability to use data and metrics to inform decisions, effect change, and align engineering efforts with business goals
  • Extensive stakeholder management experience with a focus on working with the wider business and the ability to create alignment across teams
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring, and growing your team, empowering each of them to fulfil their potential

What we’ll offer

  • Annual Bonus Scheme
  • Holiday Discounts across our network
  • Hybrid working (2 days in Manchester office per week)
  • Training & certifications
