NerdWallet UK is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead and grow our remote, UK-based engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality technical outcomes, fostering a strong engineering culture, and empowering your team to thrive. You will shape the direction of our platform and products while ensuring alignment with our broader company strategy.

As a collaborative leader, you’ll work closely with cross-functional partners in Product and Business to drive execution and innovation. This is an exciting opportunity to influence how we build, work, and scale as a team.

This role reports to the General Manager, UK.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage team delivery in partnership with the Head of Product Management, ensuring execution excellence and alignment with business goals.
  • Provide technical leadership that promotes scalability, performance, security, and innovation across systems and architecture.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, fostering a culture of trust, ownership, and continuous learning, with performance management as needed.
  • Support career development through coaching, feedback, and tailored growth plans.
  • Set clear direction in ambiguous problem spaces, including architectural decisions, code reviews, and system design discussions.
  • Be a sounding board for engineers on technical challenges and a respected technical leader.
  • Own the reliability, uptime, and evolution of infrastructure and applications, maintaining high standards of system health and performance.
  • Contribute to and challenge technical and architectural decisions, empowering engineers to lead and take ownership.
  • Evolve and uphold engineering standards, best practices, and development processes to ensure consistent, high-quality outcomes.
  • Stay engaged with emerging technologies and industry trends to identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Lead planning, execution, and delivery of engineering projects with a focus on timely, high-quality outcomes.
  • Continuously improve development processes, tooling, and collaboration methods.
  • Monitor and leverage key engineering metrics to drive performance, efficiency, and team growth.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years in a software engineering role, with at least 5+ years managing engineering teams.
  • Experience growing and leading small teams in fast-moving, product-led companies.
  • Proven ability to drive engineering execution while maintaining technical excellence.
  • Background in shipping successful consumer web products at scale.
  • Strong experience with modern web frameworks and languages, including React, C#/.NET, PHP, and HTML/CSS.
  • Experience working with AWS or equivalent.
  • Experience with Ruby & SQL is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with modern web architectures and scalable backend systems.
  • Ability to engage deeply in technical conversations across systems, data structures, and architecture.
  • Past experience as an individual contributor (IC) — you know what great code and engineering practices look like.
  • Skilled in project management, prioritisation, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Excellent communication, decision-making, and time-management skills.
