OverviewEngineering Policy & Enablement Manager - UKIFS role at STEP Fusion. This position focuses on delivering unified engineering governance across the STEP programme, with emphasis on policy, process and procedure, and governance tools.Company: UK Industrial Fusion Solutions (UKIFS) Ltd, a subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) is aimed at delivering a prototype fusion plant with first operations targeted around 2040. Onsite working is expected for 3 days per week with flexible working options. The role can be based at West Burton (Nottinghamshire) or Culham (Oxfordshire).What you’ll be doingOwn the delivery of unified engineering governance in the form of policy, process and procedure across the STEP programme.Define and champion the need for strong, systems-oriented governance and lead its implementation through digital PLM systems, structured documentation, and supporting tools.Act as the visible leader and subject matter expert for engineering policy and tools, owning the hierarchy of policy, process and procedure, and developing principles, frameworks and guidance for effective adoption.Build relationships across functional areas to support local processes while maintaining a consistent programme-wide approach; promote a policy-through-culture model.Enable scalable, standardised, and effective ways of working that underpin the STEP programme in collaboration with technical teams, programme management and whole-plant partners.Key areas of influence include:Policy, Process and ProcedureEngineering strategyDelegation of authorityPlanning and templatesCommunications, ethical and responsible engagementEngineering toolset deliveryAssurance of policy approachesCompatibility/waiversYour main areas of responsibility will include:Develop and implement key process enablers within the UKIFS policy environment to enable engineering governance at local and enterprise levels.Create materials such as templates and digital processes to support policy adoption across teams.Collaborate with functional leads to design fit-for-purpose governance reflecting local needs while maintaining plant-level cohesion.Work with WPPs to translate policy goals across Engineering entities via interfacing agreements and waivers.Drive policy adoption into digital tools to maximise engineering delivery and minimise documentation through PLM and other tools.Participate in tool selection, define templates, and lead setup for key compliance tools (e.g., FMEA, HARA).Develop design-for-X principles including reliability, cost, and certification.Own governance through-life review, update and cascade across physical and digital spaces; align with industry best practice.Collaborate with whole-plant partners to ensure governance remains best-for-programme and efficient.Maintain governance horizon scanning to identify beneficial practices from other industries/programmes.Ensure proportionality, adoptability and scalability of engineering processes with a best-for-programme mindset.Provide leadership over the integrated Engineering policy environment, balancing WPP and supplier needs.Lead functional delivery teams and IPTs to produce fit-for-purpose procedures and documented ways of working.Appoint and mentor process champions to embed governance values from strategy to delivery.Define methods for Engineers to demonstrate to the Design Authority that ways of working meet best practices and standards.Represent the Engineering governance strand in wider enterprise discussions on culture; promote Just Culture and policy-through-behaviours.Promote cross-team engagement to ensure governance reflects current state and supports change management.Chair and lead Engineering Policy and Process meetings, guiding lifecycle evolution of policies and processes.Maintain a whole-lifecycle mindset to prepare the Engineering organisation for current and future phases.Ensure Product Integrity values are represented throughout the lifecycle.Demonstrate leadership regardless of formal position;
