A bit about us
Since 2007, we’ve been making it easier for companies across the UK and beyond to send, sign, and manage documents digitally with our easy-to-use eSignature platform. From start-ups to established brands, thousands of businesses trust Signable to streamline their workflows and reduce their reliance on paper.
But we’re not just a tech company – we’re a people-first business with a strong culture of support, autonomy, and impact. Whether we’re improving product features, evolving how we work together, or embedding inclusivity into everything we do, our focus is always on creating great experiences for our team and our customers.
With ambitious plans for growth, we’re building a team that’s curious, collaborative, and excited about making things better – for our customers, our planet, and each other.
What you will be doing
As an Engineering Team Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of our e-signature platform, managing a team of engineers, and actively contributing to the codebase.
You should have a strong technical background, excellent leadership skills, and a passion for building high-quality software.
You will be familiar with translating business requirements into technical specifications, supporting the team to implement efficient and scalable solutions, and ensuring the highest standards of quality and security.
This is a new role at Signable, to prepare us for future growth and allow you to have a big influence on how we shape the team. This role will report to and work closely with our Head of Engineering. You will play a key role in driving change within the team - improving how we deliver software, shifting attitudes where needed, and increasing the velocity of delivery.
You will inspire ambition and create an environment where engineers are motivated to push boundaries and deliver more effectively.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage, mentor and coach a team of engineers, maintaining a collaborative culture that promotes continuous development.
- Provide technical leadership, helping with technical issues, guiding architectural decisions, and ensuring that projects align with business goals. Drive initiatives that increase engineering velocity while maintaining quality and security standards.
- Foster drive and accountability within the team, ensuring individuals are motivated to take ownership and deliver at pace.
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement, challenging existing ways of working and introducing new practices that boost team productivity and motivation.
- Contributing with recruitment: creating job adverts, lead interviews, providing written and verbal constructive feedback.
- Enjoys the challenge of being presented with a problem and breaking it down into a technical solution.
- Providing clarity to your team and others by setting expectations on deliverables.
- Communicating the work of the engineering team to stakeholders.
- Keep abreast of cross squad dependencies and foreseeing crossovers of work.
- Develop, optimise and maintain efficient and reliable PHP code.
- Design and implement front-end solutions using Vue.js for a seamless user experience.
- Stay in the loop with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to guide technical decision-making.
Our Ideal Candidate
Technical
- Has proven technical experience with our tech stack PHP (Laravel), Vue.js, AWS (ECS, EC2, RDS, SQS, Lambda), Terraform, Docker or similar transferable skills.
- Solid understanding of software development best practices, including version control (Git), testing, and deployment strategies.
- Knowledge of relational databases and proficiency in understanding SQL queries
- Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Monitor our services using the tools at hand like Sentry and Datadog. Always looking to see where there are issues and bottlenecks.
Leadership
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Knows how to get the best out of people based on their strengths and weaknesses.
- Has experience managing engineers from junior to senior level, helping line reports develop their technical and non-technical skills.
- People oriented, wants to see members of their team grow and develop.
- Focuses on pragmatism rather than perfection, and continually adding value for our customers.
- Not afraid of getting stuck in to help the team out, advising, suggesting and mentoring others through technical problems.
- Managing progression and recognition using competency based frameworks and personal development plans.
- A proven ability to deliver change within engineering teams - improving output, modernising processes, and motivating people to achieve more.
- Comfortable setting a high bar for performance and helping others rise to it.
Compliance
- Working knowledge, or understanding the requirements, of a range of auditing certifications, including Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, SOC II and/or GDPR.
Please note: The qualifications and experiences above act as a loose guide to what we’re looking for. We’d still love to hear from you if you have more or less experience, so long as the core skills can be demonstrated
Our Interview Process
Our interview process is designed to be straightforward and respectful of your time while giving you the chance to show us how you think and work, and help us learn more about you.
- Initial chat - an informal conversation with the Head of Engineering and Principal Engineer. This is a chance to learn more about Signable, the role, and to share your background and motivations. This is also your opportunity to ask us questions and see if Signable is the right fit for you - 45 to 60 mins.
- Project stage (paid) - you’ll be invited to complete a realistic project, reflecting the kind of challenges you’d face in the role. This is a paid exercise, to recognise your time and effort. You’ll submit your work ahead of the next stage - 3 to 4 hours.
- Final interview - a deeper conversation with the engineering leadership team where you’ll walk us through your project, discuss your approach, and explore your leadership style. This is also your opportunity to ask us any further questions you may have - 45 to 60 mins.
Occasionally, for some candidates we may also arrange a short chemistry call with a few team members you would work directly with. This is informal and designed to give both you and the team a sense of how working together might feel.
