Responsibilities
- Undertake specialist enforcement activity following a risk based and intelligence led approach, targeting illegal activities posing the greatest risk to the environment, human health and the regulatory regime.
- Provide advice and guidance on smaller scale waste operations and prosecute complex offences involving organised criminal networks.
- Formulate investigation plans, gather evidence in line with legislative requirements, take witness statements, conduct suspect interviews and produce case files; appear in court to give evidence in criminal trials.
- Be involved in surveillance activities and assist colleagues across the Area and country; some travel and overnight stays should be expected.
- Respond to reports of environmental crime and adapt communication style to confrontational situations.
- Work with the Yorkshire Area Enforcement Team and collaborate with regulatory teams, cross-border teams, and external enforcement bodies.
Experience and Skills (Qualifications)
- Experience in an investigatory or regulatory role involving evidence collection, case file production and presenting evidence at court.
- Understanding of handling evidence, sensitive data and intelligence under the Government Security Classification scheme.
- Knowledge of legislation applicable to environmental regulation, and familiarity with Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) and Criminal Procedure & Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA).
- A proven track record of managing a complex workload, working independently and with others, including partner organisations; able to manage health, safety and wellbeing of self and others.
- Transferable skills and personal qualities are valued; relevant work experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Full UK driving licence is required; role involves frequent travel across the Yorkshire Area.

- Role: Environmental Crime Officer
- Environment: Yorkshire Area Enforcement Team; investigations into serious environmental crime in the waste sector and other environmental offences.
- Location: Leeds, England (with flexible working and field/home arrangements)
- Hours: Full-time; other patterns considered
- Probation and vetting: Non-police personnel vetting level 2a; driving licence required
- Induction: Provision of equipment and training; involvement in incident rotas to support Incident Management
