Job Description
We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
We are seeking an Environmental Project Manager (EPM) to join our National Environmental Assessment and Service team (NEAS). The EPM will be an environmental technical specialist supporting the delivery of the FCERM capital programme and helping achieve our environmental and sustainability targets by providing expert advice.
NEAS manages the environmental assessment of many of the Environment Agency’s capital projects and the Strategic Environmental Assessment of relevant Strategies and Plans to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and policy.
This is a national recruitment advert. While we currently have a vacancy in the Eastern Hub, successful candidates from any location will be placed on a reserve list for six months and may be offered roles in other teams across the country if vacancies arise.
Key duties include:
- Providing assurance on compliance with environmental legislation, and ensuring conformance with government and Environment Agency policies and strategies, including sustainability goals.
- Screening projects to identify environmental legislative requirements and advising on risks, opportunities, and necessary approvals.
- Offering expert guidance on legal requirements and processes for environmental assessments, including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
- Ensuring environmental considerations are incorporated into project scopes and maintaining quality assurance of environmental outputs.
Responding to incidents is a core part of the role. You will be expected to participate in incident response and business continuity activities, which may involve additional pay, training, and flexible working arrangements.
The team is divided into six operational hubs, led by managers and supported by specialists and team leaders. The team collaborates with environmental partners to support flood and coastal erosion risk management projects. Members come from diverse backgrounds, including archaeology, ecology, sustainability, and landscape design.
Essential experience and skills include:
- A degree in environmental science or a related field.
- Understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment processes.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
Desirable skills include:
- Membership or progression towards membership of a professional environmental body.
- Knowledge of flood and coastal risk management (training provided).
- Experience managing environmental risks in projects.
- Experience advising within multidisciplinary teams.
We offer comprehensive induction and training, opportunities for CPD, and support for professional development.
Benefits include a generous pension, flexible working arrangements, hybrid working options, and excellent training opportunities.
Travel to other offices and sites will be required.
