Fire Opportunities – Engineer up to Associate Director

Hoare Lea is a human-centric and planet-conscious engineering consultancy offering intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment across the UK and beyond. We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services—including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability—to help ensure buildings are outstanding and meet the needs of the communities they serve.

Hoare Lea is committed to enabling everyone to realise their potential. Our environment supports wellbeing, individuality and continuous professional development. We offer a 9-day fortnight scheme, active community groups, varied social and networking events, and extensive technical development schemes, along with an extensive benefits package (private medical cover, electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, stock options, and up to 30 days of annual leave).

Role details

We have exciting opportunities for Fire Engineers at all levels (Engineer to Associate Director) to join our Bristol, Glasgow, London and Manchester offices. The Fire Engineering group is a leading team of experienced fire safety experts, many of whom are Chartered Engineers.

As part of one of the UK’s largest building engineering consultancies, you will collaborate with top engineers, gain access to state-of-the-art technical support, and work on high-profile projects as part of a multidisciplinary team. The team also undertakes independent work and supports long-term client relationships. The group emphasizes training and research, including computational and numerical modelling, emerging fire risks, new techniques, and fire testing. Notably, we recently led two of the world’s largest cross-laminated timber (CLT) compartment fire tests in France for a sustainable timber office building project.

In addition to internal training, the fire group offers extensive development opportunities—weekly training sessions, away-days, innovation days, external courses and conferences. We actively support Chartered Engineer status, with a structured programme that has helped many engineers attain CEng with us. We participate in professional bodies such as SFPE, Smoke Control Association, BSI Group and the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Work with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary team and manage a portfolio of long-term external clients.
  • Attend design team meetings, design workshops, client meetings and site visits.
  • Travel to UK-based projects and occasionally internationally, as required.
  • Utilise software tools for evacuation, smoke and fire modelling, heat radiation and structural fire modelling.
  • Produce design deliverables including specifications, drawings and schedules.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely, collaborative delivery.
  • Support invoicing, manage WIP, and plan forward workload and resources for your projects.
  • Mentor and support junior professionals, including apprentices and graduates.

About you / Qualifications

  • Experience in a fire engineering consultancy role.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Building Services, Maths, Architecture, or Physics, with a strong interest in Fire Engineering and solid technical knowledge in fire safety design.
  • IT literacy with experience using fire modelling software and analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to meet demanding timescales.
  • Chartered engineer status is required for roles above Associate.
