Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Technical Fisheries Officer within the Fisheries Operations team based in Thames, part of the Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology department. The role focuses on providing high-quality fisheries advice to internal and external customers, with a risk-based approach to protect and improve the water environment and water-dependent wildlife. The position covers areas including significant chalk stream habitat in the UK, such as the River Kennet.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality fisheries advice to a variety of internal and external customers.
  • Take a risk-based approach to protect and improve the water environment and water-dependent wildlife.
  • Deliver environmental outcomes and build strong relationships within the team and with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work independently, be well-organised, and take initiative.
  • Participate in a 24-hour fisheries duty officer roster and flexible working arrangements to support incident response.
  • Contribute to the Fisheries Operations team activities, including promotion, publicity, rod licence checking, incident response, and river habitat improvement work.

Experience / Skills Required

  • Essential: A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional experience.
  • Essential: A good understanding of practical fisheries management techniques and excellent fish identification skills.
  • Essential: A full driving licence.
  • Desirable: A good general understanding of fisheries legislation and law.
  • Desirable: Self-motivation, independent working with a proactive approach, strong influencing skills, and the ability to engage key stakeholders.
  • Desirable: Confident communication and excellent time management with the ability to manage an unpredictable workload and balance priorities.

Additional Information

  • Office-based (Farnham) with some flexibility and hybrid working options.
  • Requirement for a 2-hour in-hours and 4-hour out-of-hours incident response time; travel across the area and fieldwork; full driving licence required.
  • Role includes duties as fisheries duty officer as part of a 24-hour standby roster.
  • Comprehensive induction and equipment provided. All Environment Agency staff receive training to support major incident response.
