We’re looking for a Technical Fisheries Officer to join our Fisheries Operations team in Thames within the Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology department.

Successful candidates will provide high quality fisheries advice to internal and external customers, using a risk‑based approach to protect and improve the water environment and water‑dependent wildlife. The role focuses on the most significant chalk stream habitat in the UK, including the River Kennet.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver fisheries advice and environmental outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships within the team and with partners.
  • Work independently, prioritising and managing a demanding workload.
  • Respond to fisheries incidents as part of a 24‑hour duty officer roster.
  • Support the delivery of high‑risk permits, consents, licences and planning applications.
  • Assist with river habitat enhancement work and promotion of angling opportunities.

Qualifications

  • A degree in fisheries science or a related subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Good understanding of practical fisheries management techniques and fish identification skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to engage key stakeholders.
  • Strong time‑management skills to balance conflicting priorities.
  • Self‑motivated and proactive, able to work independently.
  • Knowledge of fisheries legislation and law is desirable.

Job Details

  • Location: Farnham (office based, with some hybrid flexibility).
  • Hours: Full‑time with 2 hours of in‑hours and 4 hours of out‑of‑hours incident response each week.
  • Senioriy level: Associate.
  • Employment type: Full‑time.
